I do see it as an opportunity...Ford makes some great cars overseas, like the Taurus. As long as they retune the suspension for Australia, as they usually have to do with Yank stuff sold here...we don't take kindly to things that wallow along like it's suspended on pillows...
http://www.ford.com/cars/taurus/
Oh, and if you think the vast majority of buyers could give a rats *** whether a car is front or rear wheel drive (or even know), then you're sadly mistaken. "Getting the tail out" is something that 95% of buyers wouldn't even consider as being important in a family car.

This is really sad news. I learnt to drive in a Homebush build Ford Laser and now cruise around in a BA Falcon. May family has always owned Fords and after introducing my European wife to the Falcon she is amazed at what you get for your money in Australian cars. It just shows that no matter how good your product lots of marketing $$'s from other companies will always win.

Wonder if the Falcon or Territory nameplate will live on. If Australian engineers can have an input into a RHD Taurus or Fusion, we might still have a car worth buying

The irony is that Ford US have trimmed back summer holidays due to increased demand.

Any word on the 2014 update??? Is this cancelled too?
Hopefully it goes ahead and the Falcon goes out with a bang...

Makes the drive to work this morning a little sobering. My 10 year old daughter just asked me what I'll be buying next if there are no more Fords. "A Mazda, daddy?". "No darling, another GT. Just not a new one..."

Yeah I have to agree with you there mate, most people on this forum simply did not want to accept the writing was on the wall, the numbers just no longer made any business sense, hell even the 2014 update is no longer business worthy …

I now imagine with these news the Falcon numbers will just continue to tank more and more, people will not trust buying a product that’s being decommissioned, similarly as to what happened to the 380.

It’s a shame really as my last 3 cars where all brand new Falcons! 2008, 2010, and 2012 … anyways I am looking forward to the VF

Why are you ****ed at Ford, mate? Honestly, if the rumours are true, though some are CLAIMING they're true, then it would have been a very tough decision to make. It's not something an Australian car manufacturer of many many years makes lightely. I suppose you coulda done things better?

All this talk of buying Holdens now? Geez i am glad you guys are not watching my back! What makes you think brand x are in any better shape? They are having to drop 10k off the VF just to try and gain an interest, how long can they do that for? The cruze has not sold like expected either? I say buy the Australian made Ford that you want and get a bunch of parts for it as well, and go enjoy what is now a unique motor car.

Why is anyone at all surprised by this?

Relief for me as it ends the constant mind-numbing speculation.

We have closure now.

Toyota look set to announce a new model at Altona. Maybe they can take on a few Ford workers if true.

With this as well as the likely closure of Shell and Alcoa, Geelong will be quieter than a ghost town after 2016.

Don't expect that Ford WILL import a RHD Taurus or similar in place of the Falcon. Judging by sales in the large sedan segment and current Ford marketing, Ford Aus may decide to abandon that market entirely and focus (no pun intended) solely on the Fiesta/Focus/Kuga/Mondeo range...

BTW hoping Ford will be keeping its local design/engineering hub going even after manufacturing ends.

Such shocking and sad news. Still hasn't sunk in yet.

Wow no more Falcon. Who would have thought. End of an era.

I hope we get the Mustang and the more powerful Ecoboost engine in the Mondeo. I feel so flat today, we all knew it was coming, but still so painful.

will be a shame but it was coming, but i guess that when ford exported 100 territorys to thailand they must be testing the water and if the sell ok the territory may continue but built in thailand like every other SUV/Ute. I can see holden sales jumping in 2016 and maybe even enough to keep the commodore alive.

Devastated.

This was my biggest fear when Burela overturned local Focus production - that the plant's days were numbered.

Feel sick, almost like throwing up.

100% agree... Will still be buying another Falcon (probably GT) before Oct 2016. Won't have to worry about an imported car till 2020ish.

What does this mean for the 2014 Falcon and Territory update that was supposed to be released? Will this still happen or will it be scaled back?

The beginning of the end for the entire AUS industry I think........and when the dollar slides back to where it should be because the greenback is regaining its strength we'll see imports go back up in price with no local manufacturer to rely on to keep prices competitive.
