Default Ramflo Filter - Cheap (perhaps for a reason)

Picked up a Lynx Ramflo filter for my weber 32/36. It was fairly cheap compared to other suppliers coming in at just under $50 from Motormate (SA). They dont stock the 32/36 model so they ordered it in. A good deal...so i thought.

Turns out that the oil breather hose spout is in the wrong spot, opposite side to the original. I can't even get a modified hose to it, there just isn't enough room. Can't turn filter around, only fits on one way.
Whether this is a manufacturing defect specific to mine or all their filters are like that, I do not know. Not sure whether to take it back or modify it.

Has anybody got one of these or had similar experiences?

Check out the pics. I placed the Ramflo ontop of my old filter.

i have a filter setup similar to your old one, and it has the hole in the same spot.
i just didnt use it.

By that do you mean it had the hole in same spot as my new filter or my old one?

that makes more sense. :P

that plug should goto rocker cover breather anyway.
which would put it in the right spot.

did you connect a hose from the carbon canister to the old filter?
is that what you mean by the plug being in wrong spot?

In the photo, if you follow the hose from the rocker cover to the old air filter, it connects to a hole in the far corner. The hose is moulded to do so.

If you look at the new filter, and consider that it will actually sit about 2inches lower, then the plastic plug interferes with the water choke hoses and others, making it almost impossible to fit a hose to it and route it to the rocker cover.

Ive decided to drill a hole in the 'correct' spot and plug the existing hole. Easiest fix i think.

On another topic, do the fumes from the rocker cover find their way into the filter and hence the combustion chamber, affecting combustion. Any major advantages to fitting a second filter just for the rocker cover breather?

the fumes from the rocker cover and block breather are supposed to be vented back into aircleaner and re-burnt.

my rocker just vents to atmosphere..
i used to have a little filter on the rocker breather, but my motor blows a bit of oil out sometimes, so filter was screwed.

There is no advantage in terms of power gain to recycle the crankcase fumes. Better to give the engine clean fresh air.

You might gain some economy (no even worth considering) by recycling the crankcase fumes, but the main reason is for polution control. Most people would just vent the fumes to air using breather caps with filters in them. The crankcase fumes also have the negative effects of clogging up your carby.
