looking at getting a new car, more then likely another Ute but not too sure on which model yet (either AU or BA/F) just wondering how you would check how the car has been treated over the years. Weather its been flogged or driven carefully is what I'm trying to say. Obviously paint work and general condition of the car, fluid levels, service history are the basics but if they call seem good is there a way you can check how its been treated?

Roadtest and see if everything still feels normal. If its manual check the clutch feel. Any abnormal engine/driveline noises. See if the engine smokes. Any rubber inside the rear gaurds from burnouts. Tyre wear.
Theres only so much you can check without getting too involved. If it looks and feels ok then its up to you whether you like it or not. Being a used car there's alway something you're going to find later on. Doesnt mean it will be major though. |

There was a thread that had a list of things to check when buying a used car. Was very detailed and would cover almost everything.

I always have a very close look at the paint and exterior rubbers and around the lights. If there has been a repair you can often see tell tale signs like sanding marks, or overspray. It's not 100% foolproof but you would be surprised how hard it is to repair a car and not leave at least some sign of work being done. You can also sometimes see evidence of trim, sound deadening or bolts that have been removed and re-affixed.
Some people check pedal rubbers, handbrake, drivers seat and steering wheel to match up wear and tear with the odometer reading. BTW, the line "Air con is OK, just needs a regas" is bull 100% of the time....
