I don't know how old you are but back then all those cars were cheap as chips. When my year at high school got our licences at 3pm there would be clouds of smoke out front of school from XU1s GT falcons, one mate had a cobra hardtop, another had a capri I think it was a V6, monaros. Their first cars.

I spose it’s a little relative to the era?
I sold my genuine XRGT (tunnel rammed 289) in 1979 for $2700.. and thought it a fair price back then...
2 years previous I sold my Egli framed, HRD Black Shadow Vincent for $1800!
(“Relative” as I said, but still my 2 greatest fails as a young buck)

My 11/73 XB GT sedan was ordered new by Dr George Olesnicky on the 1/10/1973 from Hogarth Motors in Ardrossan SA. Don’t understand why he bought a povo pack being a doctor but it is a manual 4V. For what ever reason he traded it in on a new one 2 years later, silly bugger went backwards

The price was $5200 + optional extras of $200.10 for option 52 wheels, PB radio and flat black bonnet.

Parents daily drive back in the day was a green XY Fairmont 302 up until mum wanted something smaller, so they bought a Toyota Corona.

In March 1980 I bought an 18 month old HZ SL sedan 6cyl manual with 40,000 on the clock for $2900 at the govt auctions. It was the petrol crisis and girls were fighting over Geminis but when the Kingswoods came up they were almost all passed in with no bids. I got 25 years out of that car and it is still going with a collector now. I only sold it because I wanted aircon, power steering and an automatic. So I bought a BA wagon which I am still running.

1979, I wanted to trade my first car , a HZ Holden Kingswood wagon for a LE Monaro I saw up at the Ford dealer in Gordon but ended up buying a 308 HZ Premier with all the bells and whistles.
I couldn't get insurance for a 2 door (P plates) as appose to the sedan.
The LE was $7 000 ($11 500 new) and the Premier was $6 000 ($9 500 new)
In 1993 I sold a modified HX Sandman for $3 300, I think I was asking $10 000 at the time.

I think that's how my old man ended up buying a XD Ghia and sold me his HZ wagon, he swore he would never buy a small (in his words) Commodore. (His first Ford after a long history with Holden.)
He wanted some luxuries and a wagon but Ford didn't make a Ghia wagon.

I’ve been intermittently tracking my old XP hardtop as it gets traded, it’s curious to see the apparent lack of interest in its provenance - being either the other reliability HT or an immediate (identical in all specs and dates) production line sibling. There’ll probably be a few facepalms in times to come...

If one looks at car spend circa XBGT era, my father traded his bought new Escort 1100 for a credit of $800 against a second-hand Euro with $3500 on the ticket. Ironically he earlier eschewed trading up to an Escort Twin Cam because he saw no point in it.

1972 as a 1st yr apprentice I was on $26.75 per week... $25.00 clear after $1.75tax (I still have my 1st pay envelope back home somewhere)
I think by my 5th yr (1977) it was $96 or $98 per week, and a tradesman was $115.00 odd

wow, so these days it would be like buying a 10 year old c63, not really super affordable for the average income

Start 1980 Ist year apprentice $62 pw. on the second year I think it went to $85 pw.
Funny I was offered a weekend job (in my 2nd year) contract by the same team @ $100 per day Saturday and Sunday.
For the month or so the job lasted at that money I thought I was king s**t.

True that... Perspective!..
They were way way different times!!
I had a heap of car nut mates around Maribyrnong, Footscray, Ascot Vale area back then..
XW/XY GT’s galore as well as the odd HO. Some real hot quickies too!
Late 70s, 3 grand would easy get you a mates XY GT when he was “battling”.
Holdens also... I bought a black HK monaro (307, 2 speed glide) for $500, off a mate that was going bad, spent 100 bucks getting the “canary” off and sold it at the Anglers pub for a gorilla ($1000) 2 weeks later.
There were stuff all “mock-ups” back then... These are genuine GT’s I’m talking about!
Mind you... most of us were either lowly apprentices or similar poorly paid plebs, so 2 or 3 grand was a bloody LOT of splash... most of us lived payday to payday to buy new TA radials or go fast bits...
I remember, I had a 56 Cusso with a 429/C6, 9”... Grinding noise outta rear brakes..
Shoes were metal to drum and no moola (except for fuel and beer) ... I pulled the shoes out, plugged the rear lines and I swear drove it like that for months!
Nowadays, they’d shoot you for similar!

Were bloody great times though, and fantastic memories!

I remember a new rich kid on the block that had a VW. We all had Sandman's, GTS's 1 tonners, a couple had GT Falcon coupes.
This little British racing green Beetle had a Porsche transplant with the proper forged Porsche wheels fitted being the only outward sign it had been modded.
Geeze he would rub everyone up the wrong way with this thing including the cops but it was street legal unlike most of our stuff.

Yeah 3 grand bought you a lot of go fast.

We had a mate among our crew that his mum & dad bought him a brand spankin Corolla when he got his licence.... (I remember we got 102mph flatout of it one night, which was boogying for a little 4 banger)
Anyhow, after the ridicule he continually copped about “jap sh it”, 12 months later he sold it and bought an immaculate Vermillion Fire XYGT AND got change back from the 2 deals!!
Mum & dad were no talkies to young Peter for months and months!
