CALTEX anyone else know this.

I always thought Caltex was a Australian company

Till, a mate of mine who works for Chevron said he was doing some work at the Caltex refinery??, Turns out CALTEX is Owned by Chevron and started life as a venture between>

Californian Standard Oil company and Texaco to give competition to Mobil who at the time was the only Oil company present in Australia, Chevron acquired Texaco at some point and thus CALTEX as well!

Got to say i was surprised.

Yep, some of it is listed on the Australian stick exchange, but yeah it is mostly US.

The only Australian fuel company recently was AMPOL, which was gobbled up by Caltex like 10 years ago.

^^^Caltex also did that to Golden Fleece (also Aussie owned) in 1981.

They were trying too, not sure if it went through, the ACCC had to look at it. Mobil is getting out of Australia all together, they shut down their SA refinery. Most of the franchises around were I live jumped across to join United/Midcoast.

i was in bundaberg on the week end and the company that runs all the mobil servos there and on the highway at Gin Gin is in the process of changeing over to BP.
i think there are about 6 outlets.

If you take a look on the back of any Caltex oil/lubricant bottle, you'll find a reference to Chevron, something like "A Chevron company"

Also in Adelaide there has been a consistent closure of Mobil outlets over the last ten years especially in areas that they absolutely dominated for decades before as well. The only real "old school" retailer that continues to grow in Adelaide these days is BP. Obviously Caltex through Woolies has done well during this time as well. We have also seen all that glossy TV advertising from the 60’s through to the 80’s dry up to.

I am very suspicious of what Mobil is up to and what they know that we don't. I think that the next casualty could be Shell as they do not seem to be investing into new sites either while they are also closing down decade old operations as well.

Anybody in the know care to shed some light?

And here I thought the name was a dead giveaway really. Something I have known since primary school..

Im sure you also know BP stands for British Petroleum. Owned by the Brtis worldwide, but was originally a German owned enterprise. "Acquired" by the Brits during WW1.

Where is United based? In my hometown Shell, BP and Caltex all had fuel marked right up, and then the United reopened and they undercut the others by around 20c/L. This was soon after the recent banking crisis when the price of oil fell right down. That sure improved my opinion of United. As soon as United lowered the price the others followed. I dare say the others must have had a local price fixing agreement. It wasn't investigated though.

I'm not in the know, but I know Coles / Shell have opened 2 sites within 5 minutes of my place within the last 12 months. One they took over, the other was a brand new site...

Shell won't go. It's as big as the other two multinationals and probably more retail focused than BP and Caltex.

Agreed. I just thought it was common knowledge.
Although, I may have had an intimate knowledge inadvertantly as my father worked at the A.L.O.R at Kurnell and then Ampol as a chemical engineer when he was younger. Even managed to attend a court hearing in Chicago regarding some Diesel issue for some big customer. Before my time though so meh.

BTW, most of you would know that Kurnell was the birthplace of the nation with Captain Cook in 1788, but do any of you know how Kurnell got it's name?
