Default v8 engine - What are they worth

Howdy all,

The v8 bug has bitten me and after I have a decent crack at a turbo 6 in the AU, I plan on eventually converting it to a 200/220kw engine.

I always plan on doing a few mods and using the intake, heads, etc on my EB.

Now, this is a few years off but I want to start planning now to try and make it easier to afford and easier to achieve.

What sort of $$ value are we looking at for a decent 200/220kw engine, and where is the best place to start looking.

I saw on ebay a few weeks ago a 200kw engine for $2000! Surely there are better valued engines out there?

Thanks in advance,
Matt.

comments made in this thread will be irrelevant by the time you get around to converting your 'soon to be' turbo 6 out. Prices will change completely, in the up direction as they will be even more rare.

I plan on purchasing it soon though as i will be using some of the parts on my EB. So it will still be relevant.

why not hunt out a 175kw? They already have xr8 heads, explorer upper manifold and 24lb injectors from memory too. Mine has simply an exhaust and goes hard. Would be a lot cheaper and easier to source, then go to town on it. Either way you'd probably need to strip the motor down anyway to check condition. Just a thought.

If one came up for the right price I would definatly consider it. Just getting a few figures so I can budget it in and get started.

yeh they're an under-rated engine.

the $2000 for the 200kw is unfortunately about right

Well that sucks, lol!

Looks like I will need to have a rethink of the situation and hope a wreck comes up on ebay for a good price..

Matt buy any block you can find, even an E series one will do, and use that as your base. If you plan to do it up anyway things like heads, cam etc arent going to matter.

Its in the back of my mind to buy a late 302 block and have it in the shed to start mucking around with.

On using an e series V8 in an AU, can you fit an older engine into a later model car?

Even the 175kw V8s aren't much cheaper than $2k. Just buy what you can afford at the time and go from there.

the base engine is the same, they are all windsors. but all the bolt ons are different, if you can get any AU engine as a base at a decent price that would be a good starting point then bolt on the go fast bits.

I meant the block JC as all the EFI windsors are going to be the same. From there just bolt on what you want.

for 8-10g for a 220 xr8 they are some of the best value you will find. you could buy a very, very good car for less then the conversion and still have your turbo in the shed

As a rough indicator I sold my 175kw motor and 4spd auto for $1500 approx 12 months ago, had approx 180k but was always serviced regularly (included all wiring looms, ECU, complete motor, factory headers) after trying to sell it for $2k+

Aust I was under the impression, that although they are essentially the same block, it would be very difficult to engineer an older engine into a newer car. Even though they are virtually the same.

I have considered buying an 8 (Ghia or xr), but its more about an attachment with my car rather than an "upgrade". Its just a series one with a kit to most people, but its more then that to me. I would rather spend more money on the car, then go out an buy another one. Some may think its stupid but its just the way I would prefer to do it.

I was hoping for a relatively easy/cheap option, guess I was wrong! The thought of a well priced engine and some decent parts I would have an 8 in the AU and a better performing EB! We can all dream right

I will give the turbo 6 a few goes until it goes bang, then when the time comes figure out my options then.

I guess for the money an aftermarket block and a stroker kit might be an ok option considering the price for a used engine is so high at the moment.

Unsure about this as Ive never done it but by rights given the engine is the 'same' you could use the block and change the engine number. RTA probably wouldnt even notice the difference if they looked under the hood anyway.

The only benefit I can see from your situaton is that if you were to buy an AU V8, regardless of what series or model it is from, you can take the top end of that engine off, fit it to the EB, and then use the leftover AU engine as a basis for some alloy heads etc. Win win. But yes you do have to be able to buy the AU engine first.

Give me a few months to convince Kirst to let me build a 363 and I'll sell you mine cheap. Free delivery too.

i have pondered about repowering my au with an 8 over the years, i was thinking along the lines of a 351 w converted to gas maybe, i could`nt be bothered now but there are still plenty of v8`s on ebay.

Only one solution to the problem. Turbo the V8. Best of both worlds.

I will have to get the AU running with a turbo first before the bug bites again! At the moment the sound of the near death 5.0 in the EB is still pretty awesome!

I might be wrong thinking the AU will die near instantly with the turbo on it, but I was preparing for it lol!
