Default Worlds largest diesel engine

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/07/22/w...00-horsepower/

Quote:
Shipping goods from China to the U.S. is big business. And when we say big, we're talking 1,300-foot-long ships that weigh 170,974 tons. The cargo ships in question can carry 11,000 20-foot shipping containers at a breakneck speed of 31 knots.

That's a lot more oomph than the typical 20-knot cruiser, and the reason for the extra push is the world's largest diesel engine. The 109,000-horsepower Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C, which first set sail in the Emma Mærsk in 2006, weighs in at a rotund 2,300 tons, and it's 44-feet tall and 90-feet long. In other words, the TRA96 is the height of a four-story building, and longer than a Christmas Eve line at Sam's Club. Within that massive exterior rests 14 cylinders that each consume 6.5-ounces of diesel fuel every cycle. And, if you like torque, there's enough twist to rip an M1 tank to shreds, though the massive mill churns at only 102 rpm.

That's a lot of motor to ponder, and we'd be imagining the size of that camshaft, if it had one. This turbocharged two-stroke features common rail tech that utilizes a high-pressure fuel rail to supply fuel to individual solenoid valves. That means improved fuel economy and better performance, which is nothing short of essential in such a massive ship.

So far there are 25 such engines patrolling the world's oceans, and another 86 are on the way. And since these mills can get a shipment from China to LA in four fewer days than their competitors, we wouldn't be surprised to see still more engines on the way.

Doesn't need one. It's a 2 Stroke.

These are forced induction, like the Detroit 2 Stroke Diesels, yes? (answered by The ZHLANE)

Gee it doesn't look too far off from an inline six. Something Ford should look at.. supersizing the mighty i6 motor into a ship motor and selling a few to China.

109,000 horsepower. Guessing they need to calibrate the dyno a little differently to your average ford v holden dyno day.

If I remember correctly, from when I was in the Navy, our ANZAC class frigates weigh not much more than that engine, about 2500 tonnes.
tbh I find the fact that Mercedes truck can pull it by itself more interesting lol.
I bet ya some Honda driver somehwere has already claimed his Civic makes more hp/l than that dinosaur boat anchor.

They still need oil to be changed. The 2 stroke only relates to the fact it has inlet ports not valves. It still has exhaust valves and needs oil to lubricate the crank and valve gear.

Yep, ships do get oil changes. I have been carting oil that Mobil send out here for marine use and its as thick as molasses - well almost. It comes in a 20 foot container which has a bladder inside and 20,000 litres is about 3/4 full. This goes into bulk storage and then tankers take it to the wharf to pump into the ship

Default Re: Worlds largest diesel engine

Typically, slow speed diesels do not oil have changes. The reason here is that they consume a certain amount of oil every passage (from port to port). At the beginning of each journey, the engine sump will be topped up, normally by about 500 litres. These constant additions keep the oil up to spec. And to change out the whole charge of about 25000 (ish) litres is far too expensive.

You should also note that the main lube oil system is seperate in that the cylinder and the crank case are seperated by a stuffing box. That is, the main lube oil does not get contaminated by the fuel. The cylinder liners are lubricated with a specificcaly designed lube oil that is injected into the liner via 'quills' and this oil is always being consumed, unlike the main lube oil system.

And yes, all slow speed diesels are 2 stroke. They have inlet ports in the cylinder liner and the exhaust is removed via a single exhaust valve

thats heavy fuel oil not lubricating oil I used to service the heaters they used to keep this stuff at a consistency where it can be pumped in winter ( in winter it is almost like grease). they call this a diesel as it uses compression ignition but it doesn't use diesel fuel as we know it it uses this heave fuel oil
