Question 1975 Escort Engin change

Hey Guy's

im looking to by a 1975 RS200 Escort. i want to drop a new SR20DET motor into it. has any one done an engin change in a escort before. is the original motor worth turbo charging insted. i want to spend arount 10 grand in total. i like the escort shape the weight and the fact that its RWD. Has any one got any thing to say about escorts on engin convertions.

Thanx

A good SR20DET conversion alone will cost around $10k.. unless your doing most of the work yourself.

That's what I heard from a mate who got quoted to put one into a minitruck anyway.

It's possible though.. anything is possible.. just about effort + money

Will be a little monster if you do it though.. not sure about legality of that conversion but..

Just a note, an RS200 is still an expensive car purpose built for homologating Fords Group B rally car, has an engine that would kill an SR20DET, and is not an Escort:

I suspect you mean an RS2000, which is an Escort, and looks rather like this:

I assume you meant the RS2000! And an SR20DET is a good combination in the Escort, there are a couple going round pulling big numbers...

Did Ford make an Escort RS 2000 in 1975???

Maybe one of the last of the Mk Is?

1975 was the year Ford revealed the Mk II RS2000 prototype at the Geneva Motorshow, but wasn't launched in the UK until 1976. Australia got 25 imports but then started local production in 1979.

RS2000's were only manufactured in 1973/74 (MkI English built although all ours were 1974 build as far as i know), 1976 (Mk2 German built) and 1979-1980 (Mk2 Aussie Built)...

If you get a 73-76 one dont be fitting SR20's in it though! There were a total of 50 of these sold new in australia and a lot used for racing rallying so there would be a lot less of them now, so they fetch big money for original examples!

I love the GT 1600 / Twin Cam Escorts. I was offered a nice twin cam just after I bought My XB GT in 1998. I paid a mighty $5,500 for the XB, and the Escort was worth more, about $8,000, back then. Christ it went. I think they only weigh about 800kg, and with all that squirt...

Default Do-able

I have seen this done, you can pick up a front cut from a importer and that will have everything inc loom and ECU.

And yes the best thing is theres plenty of room for that F*%K off Intercooler!!

Tight fit but looks the part.

Good luck

If you get a genuine '75 RS2000 Escort, for gods sake leave it original! If you want to go doing engine swaps and things like that, get yourself a "normal" Mk 2 Escort or an "Aussie" RS2000. Personally, I'd go for a nice "normal" (not RS2000) 2 door Mk II, do it up like an RS1800, and drop in a SR20DET, that would look sweet and be a little different to an RS2000

Yeah, a 1600 would be a good candiate for an engine swap, I'd personally put in round headlights instead of the square ones (if it has the square ones to begin with) as well as the usual mods. If at all possible, I'd suggest to try and get one that already has an RS instrument cluster, so you get the extra gauges, if not, try and get your hands on one, and good luck with that!

Lots of people have turbo charged Escorts, usually the 2 litre pinto engines. Have a look at http://www.rsocvic.com/ if you're really keen on the Escorts

Not sure about how expensive it is to turbo charge an Escort, but I do know those that have done it are MORE then happy with the results!

Small Ford Sunday - http://www.rsocvic.com/rsocsfs.htm - is always worth going to to get ideas and to view some really sweet Escorts and other small Fords, it's something I never miss, and although I no longer own a small ford, I'll be there again next year!

Here's some pictures I took at this years Small Ford Sunday of a EFI Turbo 2L in a Mk I Escort:

But yeah, perhaps turning up at a club meeting for the RSOCV might be a good idea if you can make it:

I hope I've been at least some help. I can't wait to get myself another little Escort, one day...
