Default Rubbers On Windscreans

Hi all

as you all know i have trying to put toghter my ford capri..
and now its came to install the windscrean front and rear..
all has gone well . except one little problem . the top corners on the front . here i have posted a picture to see what you all think ..how can i get around this . i think i have done everything correct .
i just cant get it up anymore to over lap the body for a good seal.. and of course you need a great seal ....

Hi

I had or have the same problem with both the front and back screens, but at the moment my Capri is getting painted,and will be getting new rubbers hopefully this will fix the problem

Clearly not seated properly.

Suggest pull it out and start again.
I use a 4-5mm cord in the lip groove of the rubber, with loose end meeting at bottom centre - i.e. Starting point. Helpfull if a friend is pushing from the outside whilst you are pulling your cord gently from the inside, but can be done by 1 person (like I did).
Also, lubricate the surfaces with something slippery like diluted washing up liquid (long-timers have their preferred lubricant - suggestions anyone?).

And put the chrome strip in >after< the rubber is properly seated. It simply locks everything in place. Trying to do the lot at once (I suspect) would not allow enough stretch/deformation of the rubber during fitting to enable it to seat properly.

Other than that, 15mins per front/rear screen. Easy peasy.
And then some sealant between rubber/metal and rubber/glass just to make sure.

p.s. rubber will shrink over time. How old are yours? Real easy with new soft rubbres.

Yes you really can't re-use the old rubbers successfully. But there is a trick - leave the rubber out in the sun for a few hours in the middle of the day and then with it warm and pliable try it again. But, because it will tend to shrink back it may not be successful - you need to leave the car in the sun if possible while refitting the chrome inlay and lots of sealant may be required.

hi allen

well the rubbers are new .from the uk i bought them from , the whole kit it was still cheaper then here belive it or not ,
i only had 7mm rope which i thought was good and it looked good to me .and then i had my brother on the inside pulling the rope and i was out pushing down real hard ,
then i installed the chrome on the out side seperate ..everything else pulled up fine except the dame corners ..i realy get peeded of now ..
i dident think you needed to put sealent in like silcone i thought the rubber was good on its owen.
is there any cheap installers in brisbane that want charge me a arm and a leg for this work to be redone

New 'new' rubbers or NOS (New-old-stock). If latter, how old is the NOS?

But then I bought some brand new front and rear window rubbers back in ...um, 1996(?) when I thought my project was soon-to-be-ready (joke!! tad over-optimistic) and they were only fitted 18mths ago. Still worked ok, no probs.

My comment about the rope was to put it inthe groove that eventually seats on the window panel lips (outer skin+inner frame). Using the 4-5 mm rope did not tear the rubber like a smnaller diamter rope/cord would do.

This method also worked fine on refitting fornt and rear screens with original 1963 vintage rubbers to an EH Holden I did some years back

yes new well i think they sell me new i bought them from kent trimmers in the uk ..cost me 400 pounds delivered to my door in three days ..not bad
i have a installer camming tommarow to have a look and maybe fix it up pull it back out and reinstall it and put some mastick in there to he recones ...
i just want it to looos the good and not to leak at all

You may have hit the nail on the head when you said "new rubbers from the UK"

The Americans can't use UK windscreen rubbers as the US spec cars had a thicker windsreen than the European spec cars.

I'll bet Aussie spec Capri's use the thicker glass too.

As I posted before the rubbers in my Capri were the same, I have had my new rubbers fitted ( Kent rubbers from Smaka his freight is cheaper) they have come out perfect. How did you go with the fitter?

not bad iam happy with it all ..he used 3 half tubes of masstic on the front windscreen ,,this stuff he used will always stay kind of wet and oily to..

really looks like the bog on the corner isnt shaped correctly. granted that is a decent size gap....

I'm with WOGBOY' mine was identical the trick must be in the fitting'I didn't take any before photos but the rear screen was the same with no sealer and the water just ran straight through didn't even rust!!

doesnt upset me at all mate. Just offering suggestions. Did the installer sort it out or did he just jam 3 tubes of mastic in it ? Will go out and check my screen before I get too much further along I spose. I have only had a capri for a year and am sick to death of their little quirks and rust in usual places. Good to hear ya got it fixed either way.

Ha ha !!! Still a newbie !! Welcome......

I didn't have the gap that WOGBOY was trying to fix. Hence my suggestion of shrunken rubbers and/or not seated properly on the body flange.

Completed Oct 2010
....but then I did all the work myself (panel, paint, mech., electrical, trim blah blah blah)

And the quirks are really frustrating but give a really warm inner glow when resolved. Just don't try to hurry things. I've had to learn so many new practical skills doing my cars which is not bad for a keyboard-pounding Info Technology 'tradie'.

(just love these widget thingies....)

Crazy ideas include another GT V6 Capri, Triumph Dolomite or Stag, BMW 2002.
Previous intermediate project in those 20yrs was a 1963 EH Holden (strip back to bare then paint, rust repair, panel, carpet), and '76 Civic with a running gear and interior transplant.

Just need to make space for more ...Hmmmmm !
