Default Why?

This has got me stumped a bit.
Why do some cyclists have what appear to be cable ties sticking out of the top of their helmets?Someone has told me it is to keep magpies away but they are already wearing a helmet so why would it matter?
Is there another explanation?

The cable ties sway and this movement is said to scare the magpie from swopping the bike rider.

Even with a helmet on, they can still hit your helmet and even if you are wearing a helmet you still duck and dive. The cable ties are said to avoid this.

I hope this helps.

above is right , works a treat on aerials on your roof too , cover the aerial with cable ties and don't cut off the legs. Keeps birds off the antena/aerial, helping keep a good reception and keep bird poop off the roof.

Obviously they haven't placed the cable ties close enough together !, done right it works excellent.

To the OP: Magpies will still swoop with a regular helmet, I've had it happen in the past.

Cable ties do seem to work a treat, as goofy as they look protruding out of a helmet.
