Not a lot of difference - from 75 only available in 1300 and 1600 in L, XL and Ghia models. 2.0 litre models came out about 77 I think and the 1300 was dropped. Only the Ghia and RS were available with the 2.0L. The last MkII would have been 1980.

Im MkII there was:
75-76 there was the 1300 (L/XL) 1600GT (Ghia)
in 76 they dropped the 1300 and the 1600 lost a fait bit of power due to emission controls
77 the 2.0L came in and was optional across the range with the 76> 1600 being standard.

So a 77on 2.0L would be your best choice. Ghia and RS2000's have nicer interior than base models..

Well said, also there were little improvements that were made in '77, such as intermittant wipers and improvements to the steering collumn, amongst other things. So yeah, when I start looking for another one, I'll be looking for a '77 onwards 2.0 Ghia or RS...

There's alot of info I didn't know...

Also, what year is it that you don't need EPA testing for vehicles made before that year?

That's gotta be a big bonus for buying a pre 77 (I think it is?) Eski, if you're planning something wild.

Ahh, I think you're thinking of ADR 27A, which came into effect in July 1976. If you're interested, have a look at the figures for a 1975 or pre-July 76 Mk II Escort Ghia, which had a 1600cc "Kent", dual-throat Webber carby and NO ANTI POLLUTION GEAR, and managed to put out 75kw/136Nm.

After ADR 27A, the 1600 only managed to put out 46kw/110Nm, which goes to show what a big difference ADR 27A made, although not all of that power loss can be blamed on 27A, at the time Ford also dropped the compression ratio and changed from the dual-throat Webber to a single barrel motorcraft.
