got an esccort MKII 2.0 1978 has anyone ever had this problem or has anyone ever bypassed the heater core as it doesnt get very cold here in sydney or will the carburettor auto choke not allow this.

I have the same problem and I'm in the process of fixing it. Went to a wrecking yard and got a whole heater assembly, paid $22. Will be replacing it in the next couple of days.

I'm pretty sure that you can just bypass the heater core by linking the inlet hose and outlet hose to and from the heater core at the firewall together and would be no problems. The heater core is only there for the heater but if you can live without the heater just do that.
