Didn’t you see his thread on “I think I need cataract surgery”?

Or maybe it was after one of those parties where you leave your keys to the hitch lock in a bowl at the door?

Its good to see that they've finally come into more modern styling - like a decade ago the interiors in caravans looked like they were straight out of 1970s wogville

Oh, and for the record, I cycle as well.
Try selling the fuel you used towing a van at 15 to 20 ltrs to the 100 ks, or maybe you sell the caravan park fees? I bet that devaluation, on the van and 4wd is hard to sell as well. I live in Tennant Creek and the vans are backed up at the 2 servos paying around $2 a ltr. My memories of flying over seas and staying in hotels are not for sale and cost a lot less than towing a van around Australia and I did it with out making a nuisance of my self.

It's almost like people feel threatened by caravans and have to justify why they don't do it.

As someone who has a Bdouble/Roadtrain License & has Owned & operated Trucks for over 30yrs. I reckon I've just about seen It All when it Comes to on road Behaviour.
I also spend most on Our holidays in Caravan Parks or National Parks Camping. You only have see the massive increase in "Drive through" Sites in Parks to realise a hell of a lot of people towing caravans, Shouldn't be....

As for the so called sense of entitlement, I've found It's no better or worse than the rest of the community.. (Which reflects more on society in general rather than picking on Grey Nomads)..

I personally think anyone Towing a Trailer/Caravan over 2000Kg GVM needs their License "endorsed" upgraded to enable them to tow It (& yes I've opened a can of Worms)

As I said earlier on in this Thread, Pushbike riders cause Me far more Angst than any Grey Nomad ever has..

some combinations are quite long, and yes, i'm well aware that truck drivers have to reverse in to some tight spots, but it is easier for van parks to accommodate all people by offering drive through sites. if you are proficient at reversing, good for you. would you like a merit badge or something? I wonder if you could do it perfectly the first time, or if it is something you improved upon over time through experience? always easier to look down on others though. very typical of some older people.

entitlement goes both ways. do you feel angst at pushbike riders because you feel they are encroaching on your 'entitlement'?

I would have thought it's a bit like buying a new tent. Practice before you go out and embarrass yourself at Caravan parks.

Or Holiday parks as they now prefer to be known

I agree with what you say but those drive thru sites are sure great for one night stays when you are on the move, no need to unhook and easy for early quick getaway without making a racket like most inconsiderate twerps do when staying in C.P's.

Just don't assume everyone is useless who use drive thru sites.

Cheers.

I just practice in real time. If others want to have a chuckle because sometimes I take more than one go, I'm fine with that. It says more about them than me. I don't see life as some big contest. Even if I take 5 goes to position my van how I want, the sun still comes up the next day. I have enough issues in my life to worry about what other people think

When going from point A to point B as distinct from stopping for a few days, we always ask for a drive through site.

The means you are not shepherded into tight small sites where you have to unhitch, only to hitch back up next morning when everything is covered in dew.

Reversing can be a nightmare until you learn all those little secrets from others.

The first rule I learned when trying to reverse in a straight line was to turn the steering wheel towards the side you see in the mirror.

This way you don't have to over think it and it is great to show others how smart you are when taking stuff to the tip and you reverse ya trailer quickly into the right area.

When reversing into a tight site first up move in towards the site then drive away in a big arc basically doing a 'S' manoeuvre so that the rear of the caravan is lined up to be reversed into the site and you have the rig turned in a reversed 'V' so that you can see the limits of the van and the site in ya mirrors.

Failing that I get as close as I can, hop out and Paula sits in the driver's seat. I stand beside the driver's door and tell her left hand down, right hand down, straighten up etc. What makes it easy is that I am facing in the direction I want the van to go and if it needs to go more left as I am looking at it I tell her left hand down.

Under no circumstances do you get your wife to direct you into the site.

First off, women don't understand that they must stand somewhere where you can see then in ya mirrors.

Then they only have one hand signal, that is waving their hands all over the place, and you have to work out what she means. This is achieved by just ignoring her.

If they give out a screaming yell which sounds like 'STOP,' then stop immediately and get out of the car to inspect that you still have two metres to go before you hit anything. Don't shake your head at this stage or you may miss out on a cuppa. Don't even say anything about your wife's lack of directing skills under the pain of death.

With our first van, a pop top, we had an annex and everything that opens and shuts, no ensuite, but we did have a porta potty.

In our newer van we carry very little superfluous stuff, just a fold up table and two chairs to sit under the awning. We don't even carry a BBQ with us anymore. The main reason we upgraded was so she we could have an ensuite.

We only do number ones in the ensuite toilet, and only during the night or if it is too rainy/scary to go to the amenities block. My wife will shower in the ensuite but I will go down to the amenities block where I can have a big humungous crap and then a shower, shave and bum wash in their amenities. most park amenities are very good now.

We do not free camp or go somewhere off the beaten track even though we have enough extras to do this.

My camping daze are over - I need luxury and a decent toilet bowl that can accommodate my big fat ****.

Ahhh yes, entitlement. Yep two way street for sure right there. Angst against push bike riders encroaching on a drivers entitlement. Flip that one over and there’s plenty of riders who feel angst towards drivers encroaching on their entitlements too. No one has the market cornered on tossers who fly the entitlement flag, they cover drivers, grey nomads, gay nonads, cyclists or any other group. I know thats pretty obvious, no one should use it as a defence or reasoning against a persons opinion as far as I’m concerned.

We don't often stay at "Holiday Parks" but if motels are booked out and the cabins look ok we'll stump up.

Great entertainment watching the clueless trying to reverse a van.

Everybody gets a laugh but the other van peeps try to appear as if they're not taking any notice.

Etiquette?

Oh, unless they've had a few beers. Then there's advice a'plenty

I wish my dad would buy a caravan. Not to tour around in, just to park beside his house. When he met his current wife she lived in a caravan. My hope is if he does that, maybe she will go back to what shes used to, and maybe ill visit the old man. Havent seen him in years.
