The next COVID tax.... freight costs!

So.... Got a rude shock today, needing to get a few things freighted from victoria to queensland, same kinda stuff I have travelling back and forth regularly.... freight quotes that were $200-$250 are now $500-$700!

Is that being charged to you as a supplier / retailer or a consumer?!?!?!

I have been expecting delivery charges to increase as a consumer, so far haven't noticed it with goods coming within the country. However I ordered something from the US the other week. The same thing 18 months ago cost $120 delivered here, this time $170 delivered here. I think it was delivery fees that increased. No delays though!

Yep, everyone else is cashing in on it so why not truckies.
I will only use owner drivers so aleast the money gets in their pocket.
Have you seen he price of 20ft shipping containers lately. Bought some around the $1500 (seaworthy) delivered mark a couple of yeas back, now they want $5000 and up non GST no delivery.

Containers have been in short supply since Covid started but for transport costs to skyrocket with general interstate freight trucks is price gouging since a lot of drivers are still scratching around for work or was up to a couple of weeks ago.

The secondhand container market in short supply is crap. They have been using that excuse since long before covid.
I'm all for truckies finally getting what they require and not ripped off by large freight companies.

It's clown world at the moment in Melbourne, I went three days with no freight pickups due to COVID isolation effecting the freight company.

They weren't even answering their phones or responding to emails.

Drivers out at 4PM still making deliveries, haven't even started pickups.

I think we're still paying $180+ GST + fuel levy for pallets from Melbourne to Sydney, can't get it picked up though

The truck hire just went up.
The regoed secondhand truck market is almost non existent unless you don't mind paying silly prices.

Pretty sure that Startrack (& auspost) use Br'er Fox for their Linehaul Work & they do their own P.U.D. Work at either end..

StarTrack/AusPost use a number of subcontractors including you are passing another fox.
But the majority of their linehaul work is through their own company owned company driver fleet.
They utilise a lot of Qantas capacity too.

Certainly not sticking up for the big players, but fuel pricing has increased running cost over $10,000 a month just for our old QLD operations.



We can't do anything about it as we are a QLD government contract and yes we do recover our cost 120 days after we sent in our invoicing, so for 4 months I have to wear that increase with no way to increase revenue.


The cost of diesel is getting out of hand with the oil companies making unseen profits from both petrol and diesel.


Always remember my dad telling me that it's easy to make a small fortune outa transport industry, Yep start with a large fortune.



Thankfully not long now and we will be totally out of the Australian transport industry.

Generally one pallet at a time - branch replenishments, or multiple pallets going to different locations,

Yes good decision.

Niche markets are where you can make money but hard to find.

A fair few large regional operators just selling their fleets and closing up.

Toll loses money.

Fox made bugger all last year in Aus would have been better to just place a few bets at the horse races.

If Fox and Toll struggle and they buy their trucks at massive discounts because of the large number they buy and the same two coy s use massive amounts of small fleet and owner drivers at slave labour cost......how can anyone make money out of transport?

Even Uber a clip the ticket operator using churn labour supplying their own vehicles loses money.

The fuel surcharge is all part of the 5 year contract.


In fact everything is governed by the contract including our profit margin.


It was a good earner on previously contracts but things change, governments don't want the family companies anymore preferring overseas companies over Aussie concerns.



We're just part in a big cog but it's now time to get out while the going is good (sort of) and we have a company that wants to expand even though there is no promise of the contract being renewed. So the buses have gone and the fuel tanker side is just about done.


And while of think of it have a look at how much Ad-blue has gone up.

So your fuel surcharge levy (something that changes almost daily) is under a 5yr contract?
That an oxymoron at best, and whoever put what's variable cost under a 5yr contract needs firing.
