So how do you lock up your pride and joy at the beach

With summer just around the corner, I was wondering how people gain some feeling of comfort that their car is safe while their at the beach. I'm trying to work out the best plan myself.

I have created a poll to protect identities if you so wish but if you have any other idea's than the one's I've presented, let me know.

All I do is take the ignition key off the the keyring and put the key in my zip up shorts...wouldn't be a good idea to swim with the keyless entry control thingy!!

Nice work DOC. I leave mine at home with our couple of dobermans and walk. Sorry if that doesn't help, but it's fact.

A friend was at one of our local beaches and had his AU Ute broken into and wallet stolen ( the Ute itself was I6, appliance white and not the most desirable but still nice). I think theft of contents is what's more likely than vehicle theft for the most part, cash and other stuff that can be spent or fenced have more appeal for most, although I could be proven wrong.

I bury them in the sand. Very rarely are all my mates are in the surf at the same time. Plus you would have to know which car it is to steal it and it would be rather suspicious if someone is goin round trying their luck with every car.

Hopefully this holidays my mate and I are taking his brothers 300ZX with key pad ignition. What drongos down the coast are gonna crack that?

I leave my car at the Boat Ramp, and boat over to the Boat Only Beach. My Car Keys are safe on the boat, but the Keys for the Boat are in the ignition, so if the weather gets bad, we can pack up, and race to the boat, and motor to the ramp. All I have to do is teach the Wife how to drive with a trailer, and it will be sweet.

You forgot one option on the poll. I dont go to the beach. Sand ends up in all the wrong places, i hate it. But, my misus loves the beach. When we do go, I tend to leave the keys in my towel on the beach. I just dont go too far awy from it. If I see anyone touch my towel, I play "Race you to the car and see who survives". Hasn't happened yet, but I always keep my eye out. As for the peopel guessing which car they have stolen keys for, a friend of mine always leave the tag on from the dealer that says make, model, color and rego. He doesnt get how much easier his car is to steal.

Jerry Seinfeld did a thing about this. The trick is to put them in the toe, 'cause they'll check the heels and move on. The most safe place ever.

Never leave your keys with your towel/thongs/cricket bat... where do you think the first place someone will look... tie a key to your boardies or in your wet suit.

Hiding your keys under your towel

I am at the beach everyday, sometimes 2 or 3 times depending on the surf.

We have gangs down here that prey on the tourists... last year we had surfboards taken from cars in the main street. Cars that were left for seconds.

If you value your car and don't want scratches, surfboards on your roof, wet towels on your boot, doors opened into your vehicle or a bogan tea leaf knicking your sunnies or loose change... leave it at home.

I see lovely late model cars and restored prides of joy being treated like crap by the beach going public.

But yourself a junker and park on the ramp to the beach...

I wrap my keys in a condom and swallow them. Gives me 8 - 10 hours of peace of mind and security, and then I drive home again.

Edit: Fishing them out of the toilet is the hardest part.

I use another device to gain comfort - eg clublock, quicktrack, If they happen to get into the car then theres a clblock to get into as well, clublock key in the jacket pocket.

I surfed for many years with my XF panel van, i always reached in behind the back wheel and dropped the keys on top of the leaf spring when no one was looking, the car was never stolen.

This is the same place I leave my keys ,but I don't worry about locking it there is nothing to take and it will only cost more for a new window as they only looking for change in the ashtray

I was at the beach this afternoon and i put my keys and my wallet in a bright yellow bag along with towels and the kids stuff, If the XR gets stolen then thats just too bad , the car is insured and my wallet can be replaced along with the cards in it.

The last thing i am going to do is worry about the car being stolen when i am trying to have fun.

When we do get the chance to go to the beach we usually have someone sit with our stuff and take turns swimming. It's pretty crap that you can't trust any one any more even at the beach.

This may be a silly question but just wondering those peolple who swim with their keys, do keys rust???

No to modern keys, however some "copies" cut at locksmiths (teeth type keys) might show some signs over a long period of time, but a quick rinse in cold water will wash off any salt. Most important before putting in the lock.
