Any reason your not going straight to VB4?

Another forum i visit just moved to VB4 because VB3.8 is no longer going to be receiving security patches

Good luck guys, perhaps a cruise for the night in question could be on the cards. Perhaps we all meet on the S.A/N.T border, fairly central for members from all states... Should be a good 15-20 hour trip, haha.

Will it look/ function the same, or will the home page be all different?
Prob a dumb question but just wondering if we will even really notice the change.

Apart from the fact that there is no migration path from 3.0.x directly to 4.0, 3.8.x is a nice stable version that has all that we need for now.

No - everything will look the same at the initial change.

This is a server side global setting that we currently have restricted. There are no plans to increase the time over the current edit period allowed.

UPDATE 17/2/11

We have agreed with the ISP that we will take a copy of the database tonight for a final test. This copy will be installed on the new server along with a fresh build of CentOS 5.5 64 bit (the current version) to ensure there are no issues with the change from 5.4 which we have been testing on.

Once that testing is complete we will take this server off-line for a final database copy. Expect about 12 hours of notice.

Please expect some performance issues this evening while the copy is being performed.

Cheers
Russ

Might be a dumb question but are there any iphone apps that'll interface with this new version? I know there are dozens of forum browser apps for the iphone and most seem to suggest that the forum admins need to install something on their servers to make them available to the app. Just curious if there were any plans to align something with this new version?

There is a official VB app now that uses a built in API but you have to buy the right to use it (think around $200) then it ends up in the app store personalised to your forum

UPDATE 19/02/11

The testing is now completed.

We will be aiming for the migration to commence just before midnight on MONDAY night 21st February as the next working day for the ISP tech to be available.

In the interim we will be dating all the indeces on the server prior to the migration and these are likely to have a significant impact on server performance this evening and into the early hours of Sunday.

Cheers
Russ

Doesn't make a lot of difference - when the actual migration happens we will turn the forum off for that period but it should be a bit shorter than originally envisaged as there isn't as much to do.

Cheers

Most of mine are poeple whinging or rubbish about garbage...planning on shutting it down since its becoming more of a hinderance than a communication tool..

But thats off topic, lets get back on

Wouldent it be faster if the server was in Australia or has it no effect on speed? (dumb Q i know..)

Makes no difference really - when we chose the ISP we based it on response times and with gigabit bandwidth the main limit on performance has been the lack of memory in the current server - itself a product of the age of the hardware and the 32 bit OS that restricted us to 4 Gb.

Cheers

I've just started the search re-index ready for the migration. This is a server intensive process at 1,000 posts a cycle and with 3.5 million posts to index performance will be crap for the next 4-5 hours.

Cheers
Russ

Is AFF still going offline just before midnight tonight Russ?
Do you know how long it will be down for roughly?

Pending confirmation from the ISP tech we are still aiming for around midnight and my best estimate of the down time is 8-10 hours.

Cheers

Goodluck with it all Russ. Hopefully you will be able to get some sleep yourself tonight.

If you or Gaela need anything, Jack and I are just a call away.

Looking forward to having the new server up and running. Thanks for all the hard work Russ. Greatly appreciated.
