Just an update to this.

In Geelong they have reopened a museum which houses a few of the old cars/display items from the old Ford Discovery Centre.

Just went in there today, and they have the EB GT, a cut away of the AU falcon, the exercise bike when you pedal it turns an engine which you can see a cutaway of the insides of it.

Also at the moment have the last FGX Falcon made, a white BA GT (with 5speed manual), a miami engine on a stand, a barra turbo engine on a stand with the rocker cover partially cut so you can see inside, a prototype sequential gearbox that was going to go into the BA GT and a lot more...

GEELONG MUSEUM OF MOTORING + INDUSTRY

and their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/geelongmuseumofmotoring/

Opens on Thursdays through to Monday 10am to 4pm. I've been told it'll be open for the next 3 years at least and see what happens after that.

If you're in Geelong - check it out. Its behind Western Heights Secondary College, Building 5, on 23 Waymouth St, Hamlyn Heights.

Run by volunteers so please try support this good thing!

This book by Australian designer Paul Beranger contains some great images of the wider Australian automotive design industry.

Mods, I'm not sure if it is ok to display images from this book, ie copyrights, but here is one image of an early AU design.

Not a Ford Australia concept, but it's Ford concept called Via from 1989. Had to do a double take on the wheels. Now I know where they got the inspiration for the EL XR wheels.

Is that a Probe derivative, boss?

Looks very similar, including the wheels:

It does look similar, but it was created to showcase a cab forward design proposal that was to use a transverse engine and T drive transmission (whatever that is). But Ford never went ahead with it. Nothing I can find indicates it was a derivative of Probe, but it clearly uses some of it's styling cues.

Interestingly enough the car still exists and was recently purchased by Moray Callum, who was one of the original designers.

T Drive was an interesting concept of transverse (east - west) in-line engines with the transmission remaining in a central (north - south) alignment. Including 4, 6 & 8 cylinder engines. I wonder which Ford division had a decent inline 6 back in the 90’s
http://www.drivingenthusiast.net/sec...ing-prototype/

Here’s a familiar looking inlet manifold in an unusual place

Quote:
This is a FOX-chassis T-Bird, with a 6-cylinder T-drive engine. The engine is transverse, possibly leading to an unfavorable weight balance. The rest of the driveline is conventional rear wheel drive. This car was probably built to demonstrate use of the near off-the-shelf driveline. Note that the engine takes up the full engine bay - note the radiator placement (normally very far-forward in a FOX T-Bird).

Cab forward was a nice idea, but safety rules put a quick end to the concept.
I think the Dodge Neon was the most successful of them.

Chrysler Neon you mean?

They advertised their car with a 'cab forward design' but for the life of me never understood what that meant nor was it explained in their ads.

After a quick google search I have found the answer.

There was a tele show a while back that featured an ESP collector that owned it.
From what I remember the family that won it drove it as their daily hence the 180k kms on the clock. Nice to know that it actually lived a life.

Bloody hell that looks terrible.

Would be fun seeing the fuel consumption numbers on the trip computer though, being a 351

With the move away from motorshows, the whole industry is shifting away from doing concepts.
