Default Linkt card

Hullo all. Regular visitor to the Territory SZ forum, but thought this more of a general question so here goes.

I live in Adelaide and have plans to drive to Sydney partly coming up the Hume Highway on my way into Sydenham. Checked in the Linkt website and it looked easy enough to create an account and link it to a credit card for the toll roads.

I then checked Product Review and I have NEVER, EVER, seen such a bad wrap for a ticketing system. I then went onto to my cars navigation system and could not find a way to set it to avoid tolls.

So my question is should I risk the toll system or just use my phone where I can easily avoid tolls? Time is not important as I am retired but fighting Linkt I can do without. Thanks for any thoughts. Jeff

Are you just making one trip into/around Sydney and then home?

I was with ROAM before it became LINKT, never a problem then and not now. However, I don't use my tag on a daily basis.
Unfortunately there isn't much choice although if u use Google maps on your phone you can avoid tolls, you just need to find how.

Yes I think next time I will fly. The car will be parked for 5 nights in Sydney, and then back via Canberra and Swan Hill.

I have no trouble using avoid in google maps, it's just that I would like to use the navigation within my car. Or Linkt.

The M5/7 split when approaching Sydney from the south, is devious. The overhead signs and lane designations are crucial to read in good time. If you’re coming into Sydenham, it’s probably your only hazard - leave the M5 at the second-last exit (Moorebank) before tolling applies. Repeat when leaving.

^^^^^^^ I'll second this.^^^^^^^

Given all the road works going on between there & the airport, It won't be much (If any) slower dodging the Tolls.. IMHO

I've used the LinktGO app for a couple of years now in both Syd and Melb, never had a problem.

Download the App and pay as you go.

Can I just add if you set up an account without an actual Etag you will also be charged a video matching fee on top of you toll fee. The fee is only $0.44 last time I looked but it adds up if you use them a bit.

Looked further into the Sync2 settings in my car, and found where the previous owner had set it to avoid Tolls. Hopefully it has had the maps updated in the last dealer service.
Thanks everyone for their input. Jeff

Avoiding tolls is the last thing I'd do. I don't care me how much it costs. If it keeps me away from Sydney's disorganised chaotic road system I'll buy it

Thinking out side the box and you did say you are not using the car while there.
I'll sometimes park in one of the storage garage / yards at Goulburn or Mittagong and catch the train for the last leg. Casual storage cost me $25 a week last time.
Comfy XPT or Explorer train from Canberra at Goulburn.

Saves the hassle of driving through city areas if you don't need to.

If you want to avoid the tolls turn off South western motorway at MoorebanK Rd before the first gates.

There/s more traffic on the toll roads than the other major arterials most of the time outside peaks
If I'm driving all the way into the CBD, I always make sure I get to Casula around 9.00am.

I've only got 2 tags (1 car & 1 Truck) But have All My Number plates listed.
if you forget the tag There's a $1.10 Number plate matching Fee. Which OK for occasional use, But can add up Quickly ,though is still cheaper the the Tag "Deposit" for occasional use.

Yep. Syd 3 times a week in a B-Double with traffic lights every 100 metres, no thanks

I see they’ve changed it, I also have two tags. The Falcon is listed under my tag and rarely goes through tolls so I didn’t bother with another tag. It looks like I can add x amount of vehicles to a tag and just swap the tag to what ever car now.
Nice of them to send a email out notifying me of the changes

You can add cars you don’t own, interstate regos, it’s pretty flexible.

I have an account with them, no tag, every time I go to the big smoke and use a toll way my credit card gets hit with the toll fee plus a car search fee, I am very very happy with the system, it has worked for us for years

I just open up my account on the net and add or remove cars as I see fit, any cars, any rego

The only thing I am not happy about is the fact that the Ranger gets hit for a 'light truck' fee not a 'car' fee here in Victoria

Wow, I’ve used the tunnels in qld in a 4x4 crew cab towing a tandem with a car on it and only pay the car toll. I did venture through tolls zones around Sydney on a trip from vic to qld but didn’t look at the tolls, I really didn’t care of the cost at the time.

For the M5:

Three axle vehicles under 2.0 metres in height including towed vehicles (eg trailer or caravan), or two axle vehicles under 2.8 metres in height.

That's what a 'car' is.

Anything else is a truck.

I recall something about the rig needing to be under 13m long as well but nothing mentioned there.

They got me with my trailer. One way it was a car, collect a fridge and stand it up to go home and because I was over height the return trip I was charged as a truck.

I am lucky while in Sydney. The car is in for a bit of work so no parking charges there and for the last 2 days the hotel we are staying at provides free parking.
