It would want to be a marked improvement on the current 2.8 in the Prado and the Hilux. The 2.8 falls well short of the V8 in terms of output, perhaps they are adding hybrid to the 2.8 as well?

That absolute nail of an engine in a heavy weight cruiser is a recipe for the speed and towing strength of a snail.

Toyota trying to get people away from diesel?

Some sites have mentioned a twin turbo v6 from Lexus. The funny thing is Toyota dropped the petrol V8 option and went entirely diesel. Now they want to have a thirsty turbo petrol v6 as the only real choice, cause the 2.8 will be rubbish. And it's still just a 6 speed auto. The petrols are apparently getting an 8 speed.

Total contradiction.

A twin turbo V6 will probably use as much petrol as the 4.5 petrol V8 did.

That is just crazy thinking.

Those currently with 200's will be laughing and would be nuts to sell them now as they will be worth good money, if the 300 only has these rumoured engines.

Surely Ford can see that a RHD F150/250 etc etc would be a good seller in Oz.

the hdj100r 4.2 six pot turbo engine is great.
why not revise it and bring it back.

There is nothing actually confirmed in that article. I doubt Toyota would step that far back from their current offering. I just can't see them going around 100kw and 200Nm backwards.

I have a theory that a 3.5L 6 cylinder would be a good unique size for a diesel. Either V6 or I-6 with 230kw/700Nm and around 9-10L/100. But I also think diesel is dead (despite having two diesels), I really want to see this twin-turbo V6 hybrid. I would expect it to get around 330kw/900Nm and 8-9L/100km. As far as the 2.8 I-4 diesel? Yeah right, don’t believe it.

Cant see why a V6 turbo petrol wouldn't work well in a Land Cruiser...
It does the job well in the F150/Expedition as 3.5 ecoboost.

Perhaps the bloke who was responsible for the ZD30 Patrol is helping design the 300 Series.

Looks like the Land Cruiser won’t be an evolution of the current one, but likely using the name to respond to the current trend with other off-roading brands coming back. Defender, Hummer, Bronco etc.

Toyota Land Cruiser – For years, the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser has moved to nearly unattainable levels of luxury and price. It looks like Toyota may be revisiting the original’s purpose – off-road capability. Based on the upcoming TNGA-F platform and sporting the Tundra’s new powertrain, the next Land Cruiser could be a back-to-basics off-roader. It’s expected between 2021 and 2022.

Interestingly, the next gen Tundra could be sold in Australia factory produced RHD. Unlike this article that mentions it has a 5.7 V8, it will have a twin turbo V6 hybrid.

Toyota engine tech is rubbish. Always a generation or 2 behind. And the ecoboost works in the US cause gas is cheap, and americans largely hate diesel and choose between V8 or V6. The 3.5 ecoboost I drove in an F150 Platinum was bloody impressive though. Really grunty and sounded quite good too for a V6. But I have no idea how much fuel it would use on the road.

You'd have to start from scratch. Zero point trying to adapt an old design. I think this is the reason they will most likely use the 2.8, as making a new diesel to replace the V8 would be too expensive. And spending money on new diesels is a woftam at this point.

Fair call, if they scrap the 70 series they may not have a case to fit the new Cruiser with a diesel, as the majority of global sales are the V8 petrol (including the Lexus LX570).
Don't Toyota have some type of component sharing or development set up with BMW? Maybe they could recommission BMWs largely bulletproof M57 diesel from 2002 that has better figures than what the Japs can manage in 2020.

I had a look at the Lexus LS500 V6 turbo spec and they're pretty average, 300kw and 600nm, 10.6l/100km combined economy. Although it would probably provide better drivability than the 4.5 diesel or current 5.7 petrol.
When I was in the States I had an Ecoboost Expedition (older heavier one with the 6 speed), averaged 19.1mpg (12.3 l/100km) over two weeks and a lot of the driving was interstate 70-90mph. It may get into the 10s or under at a steady 65-70mph highway cruise.

Honestly would have been crazy to put the underpowered 2.8 4cyl in the Cruiser.
Going to be hard to replace the current V8 though but the 6 will be much better alternative than the 2.8.
