Default Low beam problem

Tried seaching for this problem but drew a blank.

I have an AU3 wagon and the low beams are not working. The following happens on the various light settings
- park lights - both park bulbs are on - good so far
- low beams - only park bulbs are on
- high beams (stick pushed forward) - park, low and high beam bulbs on

I've checked the fuses, swapped them around and get the same result.
So it seems the fuses are fine, all bulbs are fine but the low beam globes dont light up.

Any ideas? I'm guessing it's switch related

Had exactly the same problem on my 'old' (2005) corolla, to the letter. For me the problem was the connector had fallen out of one light and the other light had a blown globe. Funny thing was that for me both headlights failed at the same time (though not while i was driving).
Dunno if your problem is the same but have a check anyway.

hard to explain.........low beam bulb has 2 filaments
so when you're on lowbeam, the lowbeam circuit isnt working.....
when you put it to highbeam, the high beam circuit is working..........

i'd try replacing the bulbs........something sounds iffy though if both arent working and its just happened

Thanks for the quick responses. I think I may have lost one low beam before the other, not at the same time. The two filaments make a lot of sense. I've got some replacement globes and will put em in tomorrow. Hope it's that simple.

ah if they went out at different times it definatley sounds like blown filaments in the globes....

change them and it "should" fix it

Thanks, replaced the globes, all OK. I didn't realise there were two filaments. They both seemed to go quite close to each other. Is is a case of one globe blown, putting more strain on the other causing it to fail shortly after?

good to hear the problem is solved...

it could very well be a combination of the globes being the same age, and the extra load once one is blown...

a globe works by heating the filament in a sealed capsule of gas.... that filament is not going to take being heated and cooled for ever

If both globes are of the same type and installed at the same type then really there should only be a few hours life difference (in a perfect world)

and it is really important when installing globes that u do not touch the glass as this will stuff the globe up and will last a very short time. if u do touch the glass, clean it with metho straight away

misconception.....

touching the globe wont stuff it......
what it does do is leave fingerprints on it which cause the capsule to not emit enough light, as its basically "tinted" with your fingerprint...

just wipe clean with t shirt or a tissue and it'll be fine

Touching the glass only really effects theatre lights, (in cases of the bulb exploding). As wayne said just clean the globe first then use it.
