Low number, high value plates on low value cars

I saw these plates 10 or so years ago. Car is parked on the street. Would I be putting the plates in danger of theft if I say what they are, what kind of car they are on and which state it is? (I would not say where the car is located.)

I see it frequently around my place. A lot of pensioners around though and some plates look to have been passed down to their kids. I've seen 4 digit $250k Heritage plates on an old Subaru Forester.

Are they just holding cars for the plates?
In WA we have regional series plates that hold alot of historical significance. They can be handed as an heirloom to direct family members and can't be sold, unless they're attached to a vehicle that is sold, then they go with it and can be transferred into the new owners name. So if you want to sell this type of plate you just put them on a bunky and charge the value of the plates for it.

I doubt very much thieves searching forums to steal prized number plates if this is what you thinking of.

The value is in the rights to use the plates. Not the actual plates though. They aren’t worth anything stolen unless the thief/ buyer is happy to drive around with stolen plates.

When I first saw these '80' plates, 10 or so years ago, they were on a 1990-ish Mazda Astina, colour white. The owners of the plates must like Mazda and the colour white; they have updated to a white Mazda 2. (I can imagine a plates collector might like to have them on the shelf - or in a drawer.)

Good on them for displaying them, sounds like they're an heirloom.
Plates are stored at the DOT when not in use, collectors don't just buy them and store them at their houses.

I don't think all states have that guideline of storing plates. I have my own and no they are not custom plates but proper registration plates which are not on a vehicle at present.

I thought that the rego departments kept records of number plate owners for a period of time,then if they weren’t being used,the plate numbers could be reissued.So you might have the plates sitting around for a few years,then when you decide to use them,you find the number has been reissued with new plates to someone else.

NELOTS used to be on the XR5 ($$$$s, and on hold register at the registry)
Paranoid about some of them being pinched/torn off as a trophy

No, I inquired with Vicroads and you can have them reserved in your name but pay fee when put on your vehicle.
As it was explained to me no one else can get them unless I relinquish them.
I'd be surprise if anyone would ask for the particular registration number.

Fair enough, didn't realize that. In W.A. they must be stored if not on a vehicle, they won't even let you take a photo of them for an advert because they're on government property. Last ones I sold the staff member was pretty good about it and just said "I'm going to turn around for a minute to do some paperwork, do what you need to do"

I think most stolen plates are just used for servo drive offs, if you look at it that way they do hold a certain value, say $80ish for a tank of fuel. I buy a few from autojumbles, even at $10 they'd be worth it if you were that way inclined.

I have several custom plates.
I don't know about other states but in Victoria you buy the number plates outright, they do not have to be used straight away and can be stored at home. When you want to affix them to a vehicle, you are required to contact Vicroads, to let them know which registered car you will be using them on. The standard plates which were swapped with can be stored at home to.

Custom plates in Vic are quite reasonable priced compared with say NSW where you never really own the plates and are paying a yearly fee to use them as well.

I've had a few people tell me I can not use ROKWIZ / ROCWIZ because of the TV show ???
My answer usually is, if it was so important to SBS, they should have bought them first or Vicroads would never had made them available in the first place.
As for the low number stuff, agree with Rally Sport, good on them for using them.
