Cool smoky 2.3 Sierra

Hi all Ive got a 1986 Sierra XR4ti 2.3 four cylinder turbo
and it pours a lot of smoke out of the timing belt/chain cover
it looks like steam /oil vapour and settles back on the motor as oil
I borrowed a trade plate and took it out for a run
and smoke came through the air con vents
the other thing is with the gear stick I have trouble finding gears they are all over the place from 1st to second sometimes you get 4th if you are not careful
the same with 1st and reverse no lock out it says press for reverse but you dont have to other than that the car runs very well with plenty of stick
also the clutch has to be pushed hard on the the floor to change gears
is there a seal of some sort behind the timing cover and can it be got to easily or am I in for dramas
Ive never seen one of these cars before
so Im hoping someone on here knows
thanks John

Yes John, I bought a whole engine gasket kit for mine, which came with the seals for the shafts at the front of the motor, as well as every gasket in the engine. There are seals at the camshaft, distributor shaft and crankshaft at the front of the motor.

This is where I got mine from: http://merkurmidwest.com/catalog/i111.html

From experience, you'd be better off pulling out the engine to do all the seals, as with the age of the car, the rubber seals dry out and shrink. Your valve seals will probably need doing as well.
