Default aux input cable question

Just a quick (dumb?) question, did a search and couldn't find the info i was after..

I'm after the cable to hook up an ipod/mp3 to the factory stereo, most people on here seem to recommend a boosted cable, i'm looking on your website, you seem to have two available.

The "auxilary audio booster kit" which looks like the genuine ford one and the "ASL auxilary line conditioner". I'm guessing they both do the same thing, just the ASL one is better, yeah?? Does the ASL one come with the retractable 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable and everything i need to install it like the ford one??

It's all a bit confusing to me, too many options on your website for a dunce like me..

Thanks guys.

hi

sorry about the confusion. the ASL kit line conditioner is heaps better then the Genuine Ford one, they come complete just like the Ford one. the only reason we still listing the Ford kit to finish the surplus stock we ordered before the ASL line kit Conditioner was ready to be supplied.

cheers

Just to advise we supply a 3.5mm stero jack to 3.5mm stereo jack but it is not retractable like the ford one. We find the ford one to be too thin and it breaks more easily.

Cheers

at night time it uses the vehicle reversing light, basically relies on the reversing light.

cheers

No worries, that's cool.. I can tuck it away behind the tissues for the time being.. I'm hoping to rig up some sort of permanent mount for the ipod, so will probably modify the lead you mention above anyway to make it a nice (hopefully) neat install..

Thanks.

I used the mobile phone presenter accessory from Ford ($35 ebay) to make a hidden ipod/mobile phone holder for my setup. The holder mounted onto the presenter arm is universal so you can put pretty much anything on it.

Presenter hidden away in the center console.

Presenter folded out

It has Kensington springloaded universal phone/mp3 holder screwed onto it which I got from dick smiths for about $45. Usually mounts onto a flexible arm suction cup arm for mounting to windscreens - just clip it off the arm and disassemble so you can drill a few screws into it to hold it to the presenter.

I just pulled the surround off the shifter and pulled the drink holder out so I could route the audio cable into the center console before putting it all back in place to make a nice neat cabless installation.

Nice and neat, hides out of sight when you want it to be, in easy arm reach when driving and only hole that had to be put in the car was inside the console to screw the presenter into place.

Thanks for the info Reddevil, i can't see the pics though (maybe it's just me??)..

I was looking at the clip on mounts from holdmyphone.com.au which a few people on here have, and mounting it on the dash, however it wouldn't be able to be hidden away then though, so your idea definately sounds good, i'll look into it.. Have you run power to it as well?? Or just the audio lead?? I've only just got my ipod (a nano) so haven't really got a feel for how long the battery lasts yet, but going by what apple say it would have to be a pretty long trip to drain it...

Thanks again. A good little project for my xmas holidays, i might put up pics of the install if it all goes well..

I think it might be google galleries being funky. Works when I paste the links into my browser...

try these...
Holder folded out

holder hidden away

I don't have power running to mine yet but its trivial to run an ipod power cable under the surround and drink holder at the same time, pretty sure theres enough room. Might have to run them down opposite sides of the surround if you get interference tho.

Found the same ipod holder on the apple store for $40.
ipod holder

No reason why you couldn't mount one of those to one of the vent mounting plates if you wanted to go that way so it would also double as a bluetooth phone holder or an ipod holder for a number of models. I'm not sure if the arms on the kensington shut close enough to hold a nano tho but you could just as easily substitute a holder of your choice instead.

vent mount plate and screw the holder from the kensington onto it was one of my original ideas but I thought the car looked cleaner the way I went with since you could hide the cables and rig alot easier without needing to make holes to route cables.

I was also feeling a bit paranoid about people busting a window looking for a GPS unit to steal after seeing the windscreen mount for the ipod. (deliberately take the gps cradle down when its not being used)

Hope that gives you some ideas anyway.

Thanks for all the info Reddevil. Just having a think about it now, your idea is very good, can leave the ipod plugged in, just fold it away, rather than uplugging it and taking it out of the mount each time i get in and out of the car. Nice neat way to go. I got a black ipod so it would blend in with the dash, and not really stand out, especially with the tint, but that wouldn't really matter with it just folded away... No wires to see either when it's not "presented".. I think i will probably go with your method..

Just gotta chase up the bits and pieces, and put it in one arvo.. I've got a CB from my last car i've been meaning to put in as well, so will probably do that at the same time while i'm tinkering around in the area..

I had a GPS in my AU (it's in another car now) but i put it on the windscreen above the rear vision mirror, it was able to fit in there nicely (it's a small unit), and with the dark tint there, it was invisible from outside the car.. It came with a thin power lead (as well as the ciggie lighter one), i hooked it in to the back of the ciggie lighter and ran it behind the dash, up the A pillar, and across the top of the windscreen, i was able to tuck it in behind the trim the whole way. It was a neat, invisible install, and i didn't have to take it down every time i parked the car, which is a pain in the bum. If your unit fits up there, and can get a signal, it's a good way to go..

Thats not a bad idea actually, not sure if mine will fit tho because of its size but I always just dismissed the idea without trying it. Other thing which might sink that is the stupid top sliding cradel design thing on the latest navman's - probably make it awkward to get in and out of the cradle if I do want to take it out.

Might have a go at it later on and see if it works for me. Taking it down everytime is a major PITA.

I don't know if I'm putting this post in the right place, but I found that when i recieve calls on my iPhone and it is plugged into my car stereo with the aux input jack, everything comes through the car speakers including my conversation....

Probably this has been said somewhere else....

My car has the ford bluetooth car kit fitted so my iPhone is usually pared up with that.

What happens for me is when I answer the call my iPhone pops up with a little menu which asks me where I want to answer the call, it lists "Ford BT V08", "Loudspeaker" and "Handset" from memory.

If I choose Ford BT it will come out on the sound system because it is hooked into the ICC as per design.

If I choose loudspeaker than the audio will come out on the speakers too but its kinda pointless because you have to yell so the iPhone mic can pick it up while your driving... Poor mans car kit.

If I choose Handset then it comes out on the phones speaker like a normal call.

Thats what happens in my case but I dont think you get the option if your not pared to a bluetooth car kit when you receive a call.

Just wanted to say thanks to ASL and Fadi75, the cable arrived yesterday (after some delays with the courier company, no fault of ASL) and was easy to install. Really happy with it, the ipod only needs to be on approx 1/2 volume for it to be as loud as a CD, don't know how it compares to the Ford part, but i can't fault this one, no whine or any noise. With the ignition off (ie not boosted) i need the head unit on almost full volume to hear it, so i can see now why people haven't been happy with the non boosted cable.

I stole Reddevil's idea and ran the cable under the cup holder into the centre console, and installed a mobile phone presenter (from ford $31.75), and screwed on an ipod holder (from www.holdmyphone.com.au $79.00 with shipping, pretty expensive for what it is, but it was the best one i could find on the net, from the box it says it's a "clicon" brand, so don't know if anyone else sells them). So it's a nice neat install, easy to fold away and hide when parked, no wires to see except poking out of the centre console when it's folded out. Easy to operate from the drivers seat, and doesn't invade the passengers space which i was worried about. I added a bit of foam tape under the phone presenter where it touches the cup holder surround, it looked like it might rub away a bit there over time.

So i'm really happy with it, thanks again to ASL and to Reddevil for your ideas, definately the way to go.

Sorry to bump an old thread but it has the information I want so I thought it would be a waste to start a new one. Just wondering what makes the ASL kit better than say, this genuine Ford one: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....lenotsupported

Having had first hand experience with both:

1. The ICC sound system had to be cranked up to about 25 in volume to get decent volume out of a fully cranked ipod using the amplified Ford kit.

ASL kit only needs the ICC to be on 10-12 for a comfortable sound level.

2. Ford kit has terrible alternator whine which is very noticible when you have the ICC turned up loud. Whine is much worse when you have something plugged into the cigarette lighter power source at the same time. (i.e. navman or ipod/phone charger)

ASL kit has almost no whine. I can only hear it on my ipod when I have it turned up very loud in the silence between songs but even then it is barely audible.

One minor downside I have noticed to with the ASL kit is the bass on my ipod distorts if I don't set the EQ to "bass reducer" but I'm not totally sure if that is due to the ASL kit or the kensington liquidaux I use in my car so YMMV.

In my opinion - don't waste your time with the Ford kit. The price difference between the ASL and Ford kit is worth it.

Cheers, if I have to have the volume at 25 there's no point, I bought the $15 cable from ASL and have the volume at 20.

Yeah the non-amplified kits wouldn't be any good. (either the original unamplified ford cable or ASL cable) The amplified Ford kit which was introduced to replace the original aux cable was still terrible, couldn't imagine the how bad the un-amp'd version would be.

If you are considering swapping to an amplified kit, get the ASL line conditioner - much better results.

Don't bother with the non-amplified lead, you'd be better off with a radio transmitter attachment to your ipod i reckon. As i said in my earlier post, when the ignition is off and the 'booster' isn't getting any power, i assume it's running the same as a non-amplified lead, it's hopeless, need the stereo nearly on full volume to hear it, and comes with distortion courtesy of having both ipod on full volume and stereo on full volume. And just wait till you forget to turn down the stereo before switching to radio or cd and get blown out of your seat..

After having the ASL unit for 6 months now i've been very happy with it, only thing i've been noticing recently as the days are shorter and having headlights on most of the time, is that there is very slight whine when the headlights are on, but it's only noticable in between songs when there's quiet time.. Doesn't seem to affect the quality of the sound, not to my ears anyway... It's definately better than the radio transmitter attachements i've used, and going by reddevils comments better than the ford unit..

Well cheers to everyone that helped, I got the ASL unit and installed it last Saturday, man the space up there is tight! But now it works like a charm ;)

Default Quick question Gokhan

Just a tad confused about which ASL cable u used m8. Was it the $15 un-amplified cable or the $130 amplified set..?
Ive decided to avoid the gen Ford kit as per all the negative comments..
Also trying to decide betweena new mp3 player or a ipod & then which setup to use, love some of the install tips from all members...

Think I said above but go with the ASL amplified/line condition $130 version. Ford amplified kit sucked in my car and the standard $15 Ford or ASL would suck just as much or worse.

If you mean the Ford bluetooth kit - Yes. It has a piggy back cable hanging off it and you just plug the powered Ford or ASL kit into the bluetooth kit.

I did have both in my car for a while until I took the bluetooth kit out to put a head unit in the tissue box holder, HU already had bluetooth in it so I just took the bluetooth facia bit out but left the mic and cables still in there incase I want to put it back later.

Can u do it with a Bluetooth kit like the Parrot CK3100. I am just asking because it would be a lot cheaper than getting the Ford one.

Thanks for the quick reply.
