Default Buick 3800 V6 the BEST engine ever!

No, just no!

Although he did get it right with the replacement for this engine, the GM HF-V6 being a pile of garbage.

Personally I’d nominate the RR Merlin as best internal combustion engine ever.

It's impossible for any V6 to be the best at anything...

That would be up there on my list too. The Wright Super Connie Engine, the Merlin, the Detroit Diesel and the Honda SOHC 750, and the humble OHC 90cc.

I reckon the Mitsubishi 4g54 (think Magna 4 banger) would be a worthy competitor for the Holden V6. Come to think of it the Magna would be a heavy hitter against the Holden

As an Internal combustion Engine, with automotive application I would put the Daimler double 6, the VW W8, a w-ankel or two, any straight 6, a bunch of v12 and even the Volvo I5 ahead of all v6 engines except maybe the Magnas V6 which might come at the bottom of the list somewhere (the one that made Merc want to buy in)

(OK, so an engine style is edited out Surely I should be able to say "w a n k e l". It becomes "****el" - So sorry for you Felix)

The Nissan GT-R TT V6 might be the exception to the 'V6's are usually duds' rule.

Ford are currently making some pretty slick V6 ecoboost engines too.

The old cosworth v6 sounded pretty good at 9000rpm

Well if you actually watched it he would have no experience with the Aussie Ford Falcon I6 as he is in America....

The cars he speaks off 1995 ish is when the 3.8 (Ecotec) was probably at its prime... They are a good motor if you service them and look after them. Still plenty of VS - VY Commodores getting around!

If the number 1 requirement is being rough as guts, then yes, the buick V6 is no 1.

Spot on. I run a small fleet of VT-VY V6 wagon & they are nearly bulletproof & cheap to repair as well.

This guy is not talking about outright performance or "revability" he is talking about day-to-day year-in-year-out driving. If you drop a radiator hose, it doesn't blow its head gasket instantly. If you need coils or injectors or whatever it doesn't break the bank.

There are much rougher cars out there than VT-VY V6 Commodores.

Rough comes from the distribution of Power strokes around the revolution of the engine.
the I6 does this perfectly, 60 degree or 90 degree v6 and v8 do not.

Yes, you can smooth it out - Arguably Mitsubishi were the first to do it well.

Any magic applied to a V6 to overcome its inherent weakness is good, but the purpose of the v6 was for packaging (aesthetics and ease of build)

^^^^^Plus one to this^^^^^^^

We've got an Old VY Wagon here, Can't really bear to part with it. (Besides the Rego's worth more than the car) 350,000Kms & nothing but a few oil changes & a couple sets of Brakes Pads, & recently a set of Belt idlers.

When i bought my bf, one reason was taxis. Look back before the vz to vfs with the alloytech motors were out, taxis were predominantly gas falcons or gas 3.8L commodores. Hybrid camrys now have the taxi game, but you still see the odd falcon. So to me that says reliable for monster kays. Exciting and powerful? Maybe not so much, but my cousin did his time as a mechanic at holden during the ve days and said the alloytechs are an 80 thousand motor, the ecotecs were almost bulletproof treated right. Then he worked at a taxi workshop. Said the cars werent pretty, but he had numerous falcons come in, pushing monster kays with the original motor needing the original gearbox replaced. So this was well after the ecotec days of taxis. So ive heard no opinion of those, but if they were solid enough to be a taxi, surely theyd last a while looked after as a private car.

ohh i had one of them, stretched the timing chain twice, was a dog of a thing. only thing worse was the holden dealer trying to tell me that the power steering leak was fixed by repairing the timing case seal. apparently they use engine oil in the power steering

"stretched the timing chain". Of which there are four, just to make it more exciting. Oh, the joy of lining one up the first time; racked with uncertainty...

I believe they also suffered from people thinking them so indestructible as their pushrod forebears and neglecting maintenance.

The premise of the video was how that engine is supremely durable and reliable over the life of the vehicles it was fitted to. And from that aspect, yes it was certainly a good workhorse engine.

However this was an engine designed to be supremely cheap to manufacture and help GM meet a price point for the cars that it powered. And those cars it powered were also supremely cheaply made too. See the pattern here.

This is all well and good, but why is it Toyota or Honda could design and manufacture an engines that was far and and a way more refined and just as reliable and still meet GM on price?

Sensitive to oil quality and servicing, 15,000km is too long between services for Alloytec.

Ecotec was a great engine, the only problems they have is intake gaskets, CKP and DFI module/coils - a bit rough around the edges but tough as a $2 steak and a good P plate weapon 😎

Honda V6 isn't in their cheap range of cars, think Accord Luxury and Legend.

Oh and you have to adjust the lifters every 40,000km, which is great fun on the bank facing the firewall

Toyota 2GR-FE is a good engine though.
