Hi,
I've been trawling the salvage auction sites for a long time now for an EV to repair. Unfortunately they all seem to be Stat. writeoff. Probably someeone's idea that it's 'too dangerous'. Just get some high-voltage gloves and a voltage indicator wand, to solve that bit. And the voltage is already cut off inside the battery pack by when the airbag system goes off anyway, so no voltage until you open the battery pack for swapping out the cut-device.
Anyway, I have also been looking for Tesla wrecks or any other EV wrecks. ALL the Tesla wrecks have sold at Pickles or Manheim for at least $17K to 35K plus fees, the 17k one was badly beaten up with ripped off wheels, flat roof, and some have been T-boned from the side towards the battery pack, so almost forget about getting a reasonable priced Tesla for parts in Australia. Someone must be exporting them overseas and re-registering them there.

There have been a few BMW i3 selling for less. And the i3 REX model is pretty cool, it has small battery but if you also fit the REX into your project and hack the software a little then the REX can run to take you home after the power runs out. Problem is I haven't seen anyone offering immobilizer removal for the i3 yet, so that could be a major puzzle unless you pay a CANBUS specialist to do it, or install most of the electronics from the i3.

There was a brand new KONA EV at Pickles about 2 weeks ago. Small front damage only. Very sad to see that that also was Stat.writeoff. I was logged in ready to click 'bid', but the price jumped upwards quicker than I liked. It sold for $11.5k + fees. The KONA EV has a 150kW motor and a 65kWh battery so almost as good as a Tesla.

I'm not sure, bit I think the rules vary from state to state? Pretty sure that in at least one state, ALL write-offs are statutory.

Going back to the OP, or anyone looking to convert:
Statutory write-off probably helps as you only want the components;
Maybe consider the running gear from a PHEV (eg outlander), as they are primarily an EV, and presumably extra batteries could be added in place of the generator;
Or even a parellal hybrid like the Camry. Must be plenty of those around wrecked, and they're capable of running purely on batteries. Just need a plug-in charger.
You might also consider approaching the wreckers who are buying these write-offs. It's generally things like lights and panels that are at a premium, rather than the running gear.

Regarding my XR6 conversion I must report that I have been somewhat overruled by family and friends so the conversion will not be done. This could be a good thing!

Hi again, it's a shame your family members have stopped your idea, but too expensive unless you did all the work yourself.

I din't realize how complicated the Outlander PHEV were:

Lots of components there that could be re-purposed, the problem is again the immobilizer features and control commands. Unless someone has spent hundreds of hours hacking it, then the components are dead bricks.

I don't consider the the Toyota Hybrid components being useful, as the motor there is part of a planetary gear, that seems to only add to the RPM of the petrol motor. The electric motor on its own in a Camry or Prius is only doing up to 40km/h speed if the petrol motor is doing 0 rpm. Don't see how the Camry or Prius motor can do anything else by itself as it is sanwiched into the large transmission.
