Default This Dipstick has a Dipstick Question.

After the recent service and being told I had a small oil leak from the rear seal I thought I had better get into the habit of checking the oil more frequently.

Problem is with the one finger I would use on the dipstick it is pretty weak due to arthritis and found it difficult to pull it out.

Does the MC Dipstick require a turn to the left or right before removing?

No, it is just quite hard to pull out (as you are experiencing)...

Make sure that there's some oil on the O-ring.

If I could get it out first.

It was only a few weeks ago it was in and out a number of times for the service.

Prior to that a mate who is super fit got it to pull out.

Bloody annoying as I am about to start a very long trip next Friday (Melb>Sydney>Bris>Melb) and want to keep and eye on oil usage. Very little I reckon but best be safe.

Thx

Sorry, I missed that! It's quite a tight fit on my car but comes out easily enough. Sounds like you may need someone to get it out for you again. It should come out more easily with some lube on the O-ring, but might also pay to check there's no damage. I expect that it's just a tight fit though.

My MB has a minor oil weep from around the rear seal, but it's been like that for at least 2 years. It doesn't use a measurable amount of oil between services.

Maybe some coat hanger wire bent into a hook with a flattened loop for the hand would help if oiling doesn't. I've been using my middle finger as a lever against the engine cover.

screwdriver through the hole of the dipstick and use it as a Tbar handle?!?

mine also has a weep (form 130K to current 180K, it's too minor to warrant doing it but I do spray it clean to monitor it every service but it's still just a patch, Has never made it to the underbody cover so I'm not too concerned. It's a diesel it's almost par for the course. Just grateful there's no others.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and will take on the suggestion to use some wire or a large screwdriver to release it.

Good to know the minor oil leak isn't such a concern.

Oops! Time to head for the airport to pick up my guests for local tours the next couple of days and the big one next week. ;-)

try a tent peg ... bend it a bit for your best hand .to grip

Solved!

Simply unclip the panel around it allowing a better pull and then push it back on. (Takes 2 seconds)

On a more exciting front me, mate and the Mondy returned yesterday after completing a VIC > NSW > QLD > VIC of over 4,000klms without a single problem.

No oil used, no rattles and every tank of diesel delivering on average just over 1,200klms.

Due to Newell Hwy being blocked by floods near Forbes yesterday it saw us doing about a thousand klms to get home after leaving Dubbo in the morning.

Comfortable high speed driving using Cruise Control made our trip very easy and cannot speak highly enough of the car.

PS: It is just a few hundred klms off having 230,000 clicks on the clock.
