Are these magnetic oil drain plugs a worthwhile mod?? Do they actually serve a purpose, or are they just a gimmick that won't make any difference to what is already in there...

I'd sooner pay the extra and go the filtermag from Mainlube, that way all metal would stay in the filter.

Actually I already have a K&N oil filter so this should be doing its job and collecting any metal filings as is.

even though it only costs $13 all up? Surely it can't hurt if you had the plug and a good quality filter right?
Usually I only have the RYCO Z9 from my mechanic.....so in that case maybe I should go the plug as well?

OK, so I just purchased one...
The eBay seller has messaged me back, asking if I need the 12mm x 1.25mm thread diameter, or the 14mm x 1.5mm diameter.... Which one goes in my AU3 6cyl??? And for future reference (curiosity), where would I find this out?

thats the size of the head of the bolt isnt it? Should be easy to tell (stick a spanner on it) if thats the case

surely somebody must know?? Is there a parts list I can look up somewhere....just did a google search, but nothing useful comes up....
12mm x 1.25mm thread diameter, or the 14mm x 1.5mm thread diameter for the oil drain plug to suit an AU3 6cyl engine...which one is it???

Perhaps you could make your own?
It was a stock plug, with a hole drilled in, to allow insertion with very strong glue etc etc, of the magnet. If you're committed to buying now, just tell him you need to wait until your next oil change to measure your existing item. Hold the phone. I'll go to the shed and see if I can dig out my old one, and measure it up. Hang five. GK

Okay, took some digging in the shed but I found one. The thread length is 14mm, but the diameter is 12.5mm?
The total length of the bolt, not including nut and rubber coating is 31mm.I guess you have to go for the 12.5mm thread and have 2ml less thread. The other option wouldn't even screw in. Hang on a minute. That's assuming of course I grabbed the correct sump plug. I have both a series 1 and 2. Which one did I grab? They did change sump size in AU2-3 to allow for another half a litre of oil. They wouldn't have changed the actual thread size would they? I wouldn't have thought so. Perhaps ring Ford and see if there's a different part # for S1 and S2-3. I doubt it but you never know unless you ask. Sorry I couldn't be more conclusive for you. Maybe you're best to pull out the one from your car and measure it up. GK

i dont think thay would of chaged the sump plug side or thred that means more money to make a new one

hmmm...I'll have to check out local Ford dealers.....was hoping to be able to have it put in when car getting serviced on Thursday.....but may need my mechanic to work out which plug I will need!!!

After some googling, i am 98% sure it is the 14mm x 1.5mm thread that you require, although I'm sure one of the three ford dealers you pm'd would know
