Question who carries a first aid kit ??

today i had a reminder of why everyone should carry a simple first aid kit in their car.

i came across a situation where a driver had left the road, colided with a tree and gone over a steep embankment after hitting some loose gravel on a bend. when i got there the driver had gotten out of her car and 3 other cars had stopped. (several cars had gone passed without even slowing down ).

not knowing what had happened other then seeing the girl on the side of the road with bloodied legs and a tree blocking part of the lane, i pulled over and grabbed my first aid kit just incase. lukily the young lady was the only one in the car and was kind of ok except for a very nasty deep gash in the back of her leg above the knee.

we get first aid training at work but its a bit confronting when you actually need to use that training. but i was able to use the first aid kit to bandage her leg while we waited for an ambulance (whitch had to come about 80km).

the thing is that although everyone that had pulled over to help had done first aid training (interesting in itself ) i was the only one who had any kind of a first aid kit to use. its something that i have always done since i started driving was to have a firstaid kit and a fire extingisher stashed away in the car somewhere just incase. you never know when you might need them and they both have been used a few times.

it costs bugger all to carry a simple kit and even if you dont know how to use it, there will probably be someone around who does and just having it could be all you need to save a live.

so who has a first aid kit and or fire extinguisher in their car.???

When ever I see them advertised I always say I should, but just seem to forget about it. Which is a shame, same goes for that reflective triangle.

Well done on your efforts aswell. Again, I really should do the course as no one I know around me has done it.

I'm fairly accident prone - things like drilling fingers, feet, cutting myself with stanley knives etc, so we have 2 first aid kits in the house, plus one in the Territory, but none in my car.

I was wandering around the Chemist Warehouse, waiting for a prescription, and saw First Aid Kits for less than $20 - so I got one.

Having said that, I haven't gone through it, to see what I have if an emergency arises, but it's better than nothing.

Probably an oops from your cache.

But is response to your poll, I carry both a fire extinguisher and first aid kit in my XY as I tend to go silly places in it but neither in the datto or work beasts.

Probably not a bad idea though really.

I carry a fire extinguisher because i heard a story of a guy whos car caught fire, called the firery's, but by the time they got the his car was gone.
And the first aid kit just because i won it in a dyno comp and left it in the car.

Every car we own and have ever owned all have both ( the extinguisher where the driver can reach it from the drivers seat ) aswell as reflective triangles , flares , a GOOD quality torch , basic tool kit ( beyond what the manufacturer gives you ) and a tool for smashing toughened glass aswell as cutting through seatbelts , spares such as bulbs , relays, fan or serpentine belt , radiator hoses ( moulded ) and a length of heater & over flow bottle hose , jubilee clamps to suit all diameter hoses in the car , tyre repair kit with inflators , an emergency windscreen , a special putty for repairing holed sumps , radiators and fuel tanks etc , a can of bars leaks and good quality jumper leads with anti zap protection and an anderson plug connector on one end with an anderson plug mounted on the car . You'd be amazed just how little an area all this stuff takes up too

Luckily I'm in an industry where we get supplied with them..
The dates on bandages may be a little old ?
But everything is there...
My main car has a fire extinguisher and work truck...
On long trips I always throw in tool box also...

What the hell would you use one of those for? The only times I see them used are for charging cars.

EDIT:

Just seen that they're on the jumper leads, would explain it LOL.

This is a good reminder to the fact i need to get one inside my car, iv ehad one in all my cars previous but my current fleet does not, though my landcruiser has a fire extinguisher.

I have actually had to use a extinguisher in my work car, was a Security Car (Getz) and one night my foot got caught on some dodgy wiring under the dash causng the dash to catch fire, if it wasnt for the extinguisher the car would be a molten mess on the side of the road, the boss also rethought his wiring procedure after that lol.

Ive got a big first aid kit in the car its made up of everything the cheap kits have plus some other extras. And a small one with what i could fit under the seat on my bike. The other thing to remember is its also Important to know what you have in your kit so when you need it you know if/what is there. Where do people keep yours? Mine did just roll around in my boot but found a heaps good place flipped my spare over (only a cheap steel wheel) and dropped it in there

This story goes back about fifteen years or so … the Missus was driving through Chermside when the car in front started to billow smoke. Everyone started flashing there lights and honking horns at the car. When it pulled over, flames shoot out from under the bonnet. A very pregnant driver gets out and immediately opens the rear door to start extracting kids, including one strapped into a child seat. (We later find out she was in labour and was dropping the kids off at her parent’s place.)

While this was happening, the Missus grabs the fire extinguisher from our car, runs over and sprays it through the front grill of the burning car to buy the driver more time to extract the kids. By the time our small extinguisher has been emptied, a truck driver had run over with his extinguisher. But, he didn’t know how to use it. Luckily, the Missus (who was also a nurse) had been trained on how to use it. She grabs the large extinguisher and dumps that through the grill as well. With all the kids safely out, everyone retreats. The car keeps burning until QFRS arrive, a very short period later.

I was very impressed with the Missus that day. When those “mother instincts” kick in it is amazing what they will do. The moral of the story is about the truck driver who did not know how to use an extinguisher. A little bit of training and forethought goes a long way.

Both my cars have bot a first aid kit and 1.2kg extinguisher.
Fortunately I have only used the extinguisher once on a car that was on fire.
We managed to put it out, but only just. It is a small thing to have in the car. I also carry a container with snatch strap, jumper leads, tools, triangle and hiviz vest. You can never be too prepared.

that was the whole point of starting this thread. just a gentle reminder to anyone who cares to check that they are prepared. being something that we rarely use it is easy to not notice or forget that you dont have your kit handy.

good to see that the haves out number the have nots

I've never carried any kits in my BA since I've had it although really should. Didn't even carry any tools apart from the factory jack and wheel brace until my battery died a few months ago and I had to buy a shifter lol. So now there is a shifter in the car but no other tools.

Got two basic small first aid kits from MBF when we signed up for health insurance, one that lives in the Paj and one that is permanently attached to my son's daycare bag, and a big one in the house.

No fire extinguisher though.

1st things first, 2 thumbs up for stopping to help

I have first aid training and so does my wife, Why? it doesn’t cost allot (although work provides my training) and 2 I have 2 kids, these kids have friends that come over an play I like to think that if any thing were to happen my wife and I would be able to look after them until the ambulance arrived (if haven for bid any thing that bad were to happen)

As for kits, we have 3 cars on the road, our every day cars and the XP all of which have reasonably comprehensive first aid kits and dry chem extinguishers.

I have used the kit in my every day car on a number of occasions on my kids and our friends, usually just for minor cuts and so forth. And I have to say I don’t find it confronting to do this. The only time I found any first aid treatment confronting was when I tried to resuscitate my dad last year. I couldn’t get him started, but I tell you what faced with that situation again and even with a stranger, it’s a no brainer I’d give it my all

Even if you just have on of those $15:00 Trafalgar kits in your car its enough to stem the bleeding or immobilize a limb etc while you wait for the ambulance. This does a number of things for the injured person. A/ Hopefully you manage to achieve what you set out to do and it makes their recovery smoother and B/ if nothing else it helps to reassure the person that every thing will be OK

And let’s face it I’ve seen people spend more than that on drinks and chocolates it’s not a huge investment

On this same topic some schools are now also offering junior first aid or BLS or something like that, what it is for kids over 12 (I think) and teaches them basic resuscitation techniques and basic first aid. As soon as my kids are old enough they will be doing it.
