Default 1600 ford oil cooler benefits?

Hi I am thinking of buying a oil cooler to fit onto my Mk1 1600 ford capri, can somebody tell me the benefits of fitting one?
Thanks ,also do you have to replace the fly wheel cooling fan with a thermo to allow clearance?
