Steering controls

Has anyone (or does anyone know if it's possible to do so) added the radio control buttons to the steering wheel of their AU?

I've seen a few (mainly manuals) with the steering wheel mounted up and down volume buttons, and i'd like to add this to my car if it's possible?

My AU has premium sound if it makes any difference...

Every single AU should have the steering wheel radio controls so I don't know why yours wouldn't.

Strange!!! It looks like mine has never had them either, can't see any cut-outs or signs of where it used to be?

Mines an AUII TE50 if that makes any difference?

The buttons actually screw to the steering wheel frame underneath the airbag, so you wouldn't see any sign of them being there.

someone has removed them it will just plug straight into the clock spring. Is there cruise control switches as they are a part of the same harness in the steering wheel so replacing the switches will give you radio and cruise control

Yeah, i've got the cruise buttons still, just no radio control ones :(

I'll see if I can get some of my local wrecker - is it relatively easy/straight forward to instal/remove?

Yeah it is very straight forward. The most difficult bit is getting the airbag off, and that is a piece of p*ss. To remove the airbag you will need a five sided torx bit, not the more common six sided bit.

Once the airbag had been removed, pay attention to how the cruise buttons are mounted, as the volume ones mount the exact same way, just obviously on the different side. When you get them from the wreckers make sure you get the two screws to screw the buttons onto the wheel.

Yep, just disconnect the battery so the airbag doesn't go off (wait ~40 mins, or depress the brake pedal so the lights flatten the battery), then you can flip up the airbag (one screw on each side behind a little plastic tab) and from there I can't remember if you need to take the wheel itself off or if you can screw it on without. You'll be able to see what you need to do once the airbag is out of the way though.

is your te50 auto or manual? i think you'll find the auto ones didn't have vol control buttons because of the ess setup. there are not enough circuits through the clockspring to handle cruise, vol and ess apparently. muzza has built a module that allows all 3 to work together though, send him a pm and get some more info about it...

Heh. I guess that makes sense.

I mean, why would someone go to the trouble of removing the volume controls?

The Ess control on the TE50 falcs did prevent the volume control buttons being used as you are right the clock spring did not have enough circuits to handle the extra functions. Point not all AU falcs had volume control buttons installed

thats a strange one. my series3 xr6 has it and it was a standard feature its the only way i can adjust the volume on the standard radio

you can get an after market set up with an after market radio, sort of an clip on thing to the wheel, how well it works i don`t know,
i looked at this when i bought a single din stereo for mine when the original died of old age, i never liked the look of the clip on thing though, so i just use the remote. this is`nt the one i looked at , but its similar.
