Hi folks,
I've been following this forum for some time before deciding to order the LX Focus Hatch today. Since the Focus comes with a space saver spare, I was wondering if anyone has replaced the space saver with a full size spare wheel? How does it fit into the wheel space in the boot? What is the recommended wheel and tyre size if I want to get a fair dinkum full size spare? Thanks in advance. Cheers, Commonman00 (soon to be proud owner of Focus LX Hatch) |

Recommended full size spare would be the same as on a stocker, thus if you can score another LX alloy it's a 195/60/R15 from memory (someone correct me?) which whould be the same as the steel wheel on the CL also. You could either quite safely get a full sized steel Focus CL wheel or another LX alloy from Ford, both would fit. If nobody here has any spare (pardon the pun) then you should be able to purchase a 15" LX wheel from your local Ford Dealer and then get a tyre to match for around the $200 mark or just below of the same spec (Goodyear Eagle from memory), otherwise a much cheaper tyre would do for a spare at below the $100 mark.
Another option is club member back2thefutura has 4 x 15" aftermarket alloys that came off his LX Focus when he fitted 17's. I have suggested they be each sold at $75 plus postage and he thinks it's a great idea, should be around $100 all up posted direct to major metros on the East Coast (West coast gangstas need not apply unless they're cashed up). It would fit perfectly and be a safer alternative even if it isn't the same alloy, and ends up far cheaper than any other option of purchasing a factory rim from Ford and fitting a new tyre. His rims are in very good condition with quite new tyres. Perfect for 4 spares somewhere in this wide HOT brown land! As for fitting them in... I'd recommend getting a polystyrene or foam rubber insert cut to fit the boot floor under the carpet as a full sized spare will stick up a little and make the carpet surface lumpy. The Focus boot floor is a one-piece removeable carpet with some form of carton board or fibre filling which makes it quite solid, so the whole floor will be raised and not just a tyre-shaped bulge. You'll need to support this with a cutout to support the remaining sections of the floor around the tyre. Seen it done in an ST170 I think.
