Help Req. With Engine Number

Found a nice little Mk1 Escort in SA with a worked 2.0L Pinto in it, but need to know if it's been registered with the engine in it. Hoping someone can help me out. All I've got to go on is the engine number from the rego form, but but i don't think it's complete. It's ; SN3827P
If anyone can shed some light on whether this is a pinto or a kent motor for me, it would be much appreciated, and might just help me get into my first esky. Cheers, in advance.......

To my undersatanding, if the car was not available in Australia with a certain engine option then the car would need to be engineered and passed. I'm assuming Transport SA should have a record of this or the current owner? Is the car currently registered in SA?

As the Mk1 was not "officially" available with a 2.0L in Australia (apart from the 25 homologated Mk1 RS2000's) then the above would be required. As the 2.0L Pinto upgrade is relatively simple I'm doubting it has been registered with this combination.

Yes, that engine number you have mentioned does look a little unusual - all ford Escorts chassis number and engine numbers matched from the factory and that does not look like a generic number from that era. For example it should read like CK41XK (chassis no.) if it were a Mk2 RS escort.

As above, check in on one of those sites for more info if required.

The 205 is a casing number for the later pinto blocks as used in the sierras and capris (UK)....unfortunately we didn't get these "thicker" blocks down here in Australia.

That number looks like the serial number. I'm not sure about SA, but here in Vic, there is a number you can call at the RTA to check the details of a car. They require and engine number, vin number or rego number to check if something has been altered. When all said and done, unless the owner is offering the car with RW & Rego, you'll probably have to get some sort of certification on it anyway. From my experience, its just a case of proving the brakes/suspension etc is up to the job (ie. Mk 2 spec) and getting an engineer to sign off on it. No big deal, just a little extra expense. My advice, just ask the guy to prove it was registered with a 2lt, if it wasn't bargain down the price. You might get lucky, but some buyers wont care if they only want to put it on a track.

Hi All, I am also the proud owner of a '78 Esky 1600 crossflow (twin Webbers, Redline inlet manifold etc etc) MK2 4 door with lots of recent work done on it and lovely paint job. I'm aiming to register it with car club (cheap) reggio but can't find the £%$%&*&^%^ engine number,

Can anyone point me iin the right direction??

both pinto and kent motors have the engine number on the exhaust side
bottom corner, bellhousing side

no, that 711m number IS the engine number

Thanks again, but the engine number I need is the engine serial number as shown on the rego docs and every engine has a different number. When new, the engine and body numbers match. My docs show it as AVOR4523.

The 711 number is the block type and is the same for all motors of that type.

Try on the little block cast into side near no.1 exhaust just before head. Should be stamped into the top side of this little block piece.

Hi Scort, does that look like an upright, thick capital "T"?

I coudn't find anything stamped on the top, it was smoothly machined, unpainted and unmarked!
