205's were within legal limits for me in Tassie. & they were $20 cheaper. Each!

I understand the O/Ds but my point was about matching the width of the wheel rims with the tyres. For example, my standard 16" diameter alloys have 6.5 inches (about 165 mm) wide rims:
http://www.wheelking.com.au/Wheels/t...9/Default.aspx

The tyres are the standard 195/45VR16 (84V) Conti PremiumContact 2 tyres or 195/45 R16 (84H) ContiPremiumContact 2 tyres on the Conti website:
http://www.conti-online.com/generato...n;tabNr=4.html

Continental also make 205/45 R16 83W tyres. What wheel rim width do they fit? (I can't find out.) For example these 16" wheels have 6" rims (about 152mm):
http://www.wheelking.com.au/Wheels/t...0/Default.aspx
Wheelking tells me they also take the 195/45VR16 (84V) Conti PremiumContact 2s.

Other 16" wheels suitable for the Fiesta have 7" rims (about 178 mm), for example these:
http://www.wheelking.com.au/Wheels/t...1/Default.aspx

It is even possible to get 16" wheels with 8" (203mm) rims:
http://wheels.my105.com/index.asp?pr...&parentid=7851
I suspect these are too wide for the Fiesta.

And every single 16" wheel for the Fiesta on the WheelKing site comes with a 195/45 tyre.

So my question is, how do you know is a tyre - especially a non-standard tyre - will fit on your existing rims?

Call frank at wheel King , he will set you up with the right size wheels and tyres, he knows his game and knows the legal aspect of fitting the right size wheels and tyres to suit your car.

Here is a list of tyre sizes from Toyo, not something I could find for Continental.
As you can see, there's a range of rim widths each tyre will fit. Half an inch each way.

Thanks Liri. I rang AAMI today and the tyres must be the same size as what Ford specify, so in my case a 195. The wheels being the part holding the car to the ground so no doubt they would try and blame people for changing them if the car rolled or something. She said better keep to the exact size that Ford say in the manual, so that I will!

Interesting. Can the insurance company void you cover if you do something that is legally above board?

Yup they sure can,any change that can be the contributing factor to a crash will void it,especially because you did'nt inform your insurance of the changes made to the car prior.

Well if anything goes wrong with your car, you crash, rollover whatever, the wheels are the one key part that holds you to the road. This is the first place they look to try and void your cover. They can and I've seen it happen before. Everything must be verified by your manufactures specifications and your insurance company needs to know every update to your vehicle (for price and legal reasons). Leaving mine with 16s until they wear out then I'll get 17s after notifying AAMI and verifying their comparability with Ford.

What size tyres are standard on the 17's? I know the XR4 uses a 205, but ti's a 7inch rim.

Either way, looks like this could be a pain the ***. The bloody tyre dealer could have mentioned something.

Do not ring your current insurer as you, ring up as an inquirer and ask they they think of the change. Ask Ford what their thoughts are also, sone dealers are helpful but most are useless so Ford Australia is the best bet. Just cover yourself, your insurer may be more open. I'm a 20 year old male with what is classified as a 'sports car' as I have a 3-Door, so I'm a massive risk!!!

Insurance companies will do what they think they can get away with. They are ultimately motivated by profit.

You are of course entitled to challenge them and pursue them through the legal process, or the press or by whatever other means. But that can easily cost more than your car is worth.

I'm 37 & only made 1 claim with my insurer & that was someone backing into me in a car park. So I'm hardly a big risk.
I think I'll try Ford first

I really do feel sorry for anyone who gets stuffed around by their insurance company just because they want to put wheels on a car. I'm getting my new wheels tomorrow and it's not going effect my insurance at all.

Exactly ... most Insurance Companies these days don't insure any vehicle that has been "modified in any way whatsoever", ... trouble is they just don't tell you this little secret ... until you try and make a claim that is!

Be very careful when changing anything on your car, check with your Insurance Company first before going ahead, if they say it's OK then ask them to send out a revised policy with the modifications included on it.

Until you receive this new revised policy in your "hot little hand" ... do nothing to the car! ...

Do not take the Insurance Company Customer Service Operators word for it verbally over the phone that the modifications you want to carry out are allowed.

Also, how do I take off my hubcaps? I managed to snap one of the clips off with a screw driver but I don't know how to get the whole thing off.

Thanks.

Does anybody know the width of the 17" Zetec wheels? What size in 16 and 17" fits without rubbing on the Fiesta? I'm after width in inches. Thanks.

The wife and I spent day looking for wheels for our new WS Zetec we pick up on Monday and the range, or should I say lack of, is depressing. We might just wait and hope something better comes out.
