Default Oil & Filter change XR5 Turbo

Hi, has anyone changed the oil and filter on their XR5? Is the oil filter easy to get to?

It’s easy enough if you have the right tools, you will need a Crowfoot (common name) or Flarenut Spanner (correct name) to remove the oil filter, and no you won't find one hanging in the average owners garage. Off the top of my head I think the size you need is 34mm. The oil filter is only available genuine and their not cheap at around $30 retail and no unfortunately the Volvo ones are different and don't fit! The XR5 holds a fair bit of oil to from memory something like 6lt's all up. The plastic sump guard needs to be removed to get at the drain plug but other than that it’s pretty straight forward. You will need to go to a specialist tool shop and order a crowfoot spanner set, I’m not sure if you can buy them separately, mines part of a set. A reasonable quality set will cost you north of $100 though!! Don’t be tempted to attack the oilfilter cap with a shifter or anything else other than the correct spanner, I would hate to think what Ford would charge you for a new one and if you do happen to break it (its only cast alloy) the car will be undrivable until you get a replacement.

Here’s a picture of a crowfoot spanner

Hope that helps you out.

Great thanks for the information. I will get hold of the correct spanner before attempting. I see Ryco has just released a Oil Filter for the Focus XR5. I have done a bit of cross checking and it appears it is the same as for the Mondeo. Part Number is R2652P.

How often are people changing their oil?
Obviously gets done every 15,000km/12 months with services, but anyone doing it earlier/more frequently?

Have just ordered the crowfoot spanner set so I can get to the filter. Might as well add to the tool collection... Car has just ticked over 60,000km so will start doing the oil each 10k.

So, how easy was it to do the oil and filter change on the car after you got the correct spanner ?
