Default 1969 Ford Capri GT

Hi,
Im 21 years old, and just purchased a 1969 Capri, apparently its a genuine GT.
How can i find out if its a genuine one?
It's got the original 4 cyl, but i think I will put a small windsor and T5 in.
Body is ok condition, not much rust which i why i purchased it.

I've done my 'motorsport' course, so 4 years of Mechanical work, welding, and teaching myself to panel beat and spray paint should finally be put in place.

Any info regaring the 69 Capri GT's would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Turns out it is a GT. There is a Id tag on the front right inner guard, should there be another?
Also what does CKD KIT mean?

Ckd is iirc 'complete knocked down' kit...

Basically it comes over in a big box and assembled here. Not too dissimilar to your average tamiya rc car...

There will only be one plate for a 1969, and it's a build plate. The compliance plate came out in 1970.

The numbers you need for a 1969 GT 1600:

Model number: 13918

Chassis/body number: needs to start with CK17 and this number will be on the build plate in two parts (CK17J? then a five digit number). This same number should also be stamped on the slam panel, which is the panel that is on top of the grill. The number is normally found to the rear of the bonnet locking mechanism.

There will also be a number stamped on top of the drivers side front strut tower, which will start with J, and this is the same as the original engine number.

Love to see a few pics if you had them.

Cheers
Jamie

I will get some pictures next week and upload into the rebuild section, I'll p.m you when they are up.

Is there a danger in posting a picture of the compliance plate? That way you might be able to help me out a little more.

And thank you for your help, much appreciated.

13918 = 2dr GT
Engine F = 1600cc 2v (small 2-stage dual throat Weber, maybe 32-36?)
Trans X = 4spd GT (or V for 4spd std), with GT being closer ratio IIRC
Trim B= black, N = Dark Saddle (brown), W = White
Diff 3.778 for GT, 3.889 for std

For what its worth, 1969 model 1600GT are rarer than V6 GTs. You never see them at any shows. Kicking myself for selling mine many years ago.

As far as conversions go, check with your Rego Authority in your state for permissable engine swaps. Rules have changed recently in (at least) NSW I believe.

Thanks Heaps!
Looks like its an original GT, with original 1600cc engine, 4sp box, black trim, GT diff.

Regarding engine rules, with a Victorian club rego, i believe you can put whatever engine you want, will definately clarify though.

And you can buy mine off me haha, I purchased it for $3800, $3900 and its yours haha

There should be a letter in the paint code section, but the paint may have faded making it hard to know what code is for what.

You could list all the single digit/letter codes in order from left to right on the plate, leaving out the chassis number to be safe. Some people are comfortable showing their build/compliance plate, some not.

Paint has faded, can you tell me, would it just be a single letter? Is B a paint code?

B is more likely your trim colour code. The colour code can be a letter or a number.

The different reds on early capris could be either candy apple red (G), track red (H), or vermillion fire (6). Most red 1600GTs I've come across have been vermillion fire.

Ok so there's a 6 on there so I'm guessing its a Vermillion fire

With regard to club rego, you'll need to get a RWC before the club will sign your paperwork to get a permit. If fitting a V8 you'll need an engineers certificate to get the RWC. Unlike other clubs who have a representative who is willing to vouch for the safety of cars in order to get club permit, the Capri Club of Victoria, will not do this. (And rightly so) The individual owner is responsible for keeping their car "legal" under the terms of the club permit scheme. This is to protect other club members on the club permit scheme (including myself)
If you have any more questions regarding club permits, please contact the club direct.
Cheers Glenn

Thanks Glenn, all info is much appreciated, first time doing something like this so it all helps!
And I think rego is a few years away just yet haha.

I've found out some more info, it is the original 1600 engine and gearbox which is good to know, so I think I'll leave her genuine.
I'll rebuild engine and get it running first, then start on the body I think.

Thanks......If you want to go V8 route, find an incomplete 4cyl vehicle and go from there. There will be less to throw out as well.

Some of us here get a bit touchy when complete and original examples are 'enhanced' for the V8 / Turbo / SR20 path.

But it's your car, you can do what you want.

Mine - V6 GT, original except for polybush susp, thermo fan, CD player under dash and grafted-into-grille driving lights. Less maintenenace and insurance hassles that way !!

Thanks for your thoughts, always good to get another's views onto ideas. I tend to agree, at first I thought it was a bit of a roughy, but finding out this information has changed my mind a fair bit.
I'll definitely rebuild engine and gearbox, might even turbo the 1600...
We will see what the mrs thinks haha

Matt, Whooligan is right about the Club Permit 'rego' in Victoria. Also, you should consider that you may need to actually get Street Rod (SR) 'rego' due to the V8 mods. We do have V8 Capri's in Vic but none are on the Club permit scheme from recollection.

For what it's worth, I'd say keep it standard as it will only go up in value as an original 1600GT or do what Allen says and get another body to do the V8 conversion.

Can you post the 2 letters after the CK17 code as these tell us what year and month it was built. The first 1600GT Capri is a CK17JM code (J=1969, M=March) and then the next 113 are CK17JP (J=1969, P=April). These 1600GTs were all built before the Capri was released in May, 1969!

Thanks for your opinions, advice and help Terry, it's much appreciated.
I'll keep it standard, I just want to get it running, and do the body as I go, it won't be a perfect example, just something I can jump in and drive.

The numbers are CK17JB.
Thanks again!

My '69 1600GT did not have the bonnet bulge - just the flat bonnet. I sold that Capri in late 1983.

The bulge first appeared on the 1970 3000GT, and then from maybe '72 onwards it was on all cars (only one bonnet type needed in stock from then on). Even the 1970 1600XL (was '69 GT spec) had a flat bonnet.

Others more knowledgable about the production sequence can provide a better cutover date for the bulge.

Easy reference source is the brochures under the main page on this forum.

For Australia only the v6 got the bonnet bulge and all the 1600s were flat.

OK caprispecial, I had been told by other Capri manics that the bulge appeared on all later Capri Mk1's here.
Happy to be corrected.
