It’s official. The Mach 1 is back. Looks like it will be a track pack. Priced about the same as the Bullitt.

Looks like this will take the place of the gt350, which is finishing up. But it will steal bits from it. 305’s Sport Cup 2’s all round will stick like glue.

Not going to be anywhere near as powerful only being a 5.0 though. Curious what transmissions get picked.

I thought the Mach 1 was going to be that electric crossover SUV. I prefer this track edition anyway.

“Mach 1 has a special place in Mustang history, and it’s time for this special edition to claim the top spot in our 5.0-litre V8 performance lineup and reward our most hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who demand that next level of power, precision and collectability,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Icons. “Like the original, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 will be true to its heritage, delivering great looks and as the most track-capable 5.0-litre Mustang ever.”

So expect a more powerful V8 engine tune, upgrades suspension and brakes and unique styling cues when the Mach 1 breaks cover later this year.

The ol'Mach1 always looked good, this cant be a bad thing and will sit under the R Spec will even if it is/was limited.

The thing is the R Spec is pretty much done. All sold bar a handful in dealers, and production wraps up soon, if it hasn't already. So there will be no R Specs to buy soon. Especially in 2021 when the Mach 1 is available.

It would baffle me why they wouldn't bring it here if it's around Bullitt pricing as they are suggesting.

You'd think they would try to sell as many limited edition Mustangs here as they could, considering they sell out so quickly ie Bullitt and R Spec.

New track-focused Mustang to have more grunt than Shelby GT350R

How does nearly 400kW of naturally aspirated V8 awesomeness sound?
Ford is working on a new track-focused Mustang that will pack one hell of a naturally aspirated V8 punch.

Set to be badged as the Mach 1, the new variant was initially expected to just be a limited-edition replacement for the outgoing Bullitt.


However, it seems the new pony car will be more than just a sticker pack, and actually fill the shoes of Shelby’s atmo hero, the GT350R.

A report from Ford Authority that cites “sources familiar with product plans” claims engineers for the Mach 1 ’Stang are aiming for power figures in the region of 390kW and 610Nm.


As a frame of reference, the standard 5.0-litre GT Mustang has 339kW and 556Nm when sold in Australia. The Bullitt that the Mach 1 replaces had just an extra 6kW over the regular GT, and the exact same torque figure.

Despite commanding an almost $11,000 premium over regular GT models, the Bullitt was extremely popular in Australia with all available models selling out rapidly.


The most powerful naturally aspirated V8 Mustang currently sold by Ford is the Shelby GT350R, which utilises a flat-plane crank 5.2-litre V8 putting down 392kW and 582Nm – so a couple of extra kW compared to the rumoured Mach 1 figures, but 28 fewer Nm.

Unlike the Shelby, the new Mach 1 will utilise the standard Modular Family 5.0-litre Coyote engine. Asking that atmo engine to produce an extra 50-ish kW will be a significant challenge for Ford’s engineers.


It’s rumoured that new camshafts and heads will be recruited to get the Coyote making nearly 400kW reliably, without the aid of forced induction.

Being a track-focused variant, it’s not just the engine coming in for a refresh. The Mach 1 is expected to roll on sporty rubber (likely Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s), wrapped around 19-inch rims in meaty 305/30 specs.


Spy photos released by Ford confirm new aero additions, including a distinctive front bumper with twin circular air intakes, and a rear lip spoiler.

No suspension changes have been confirmed, though it’s likely stiffer, more track-focused springs and dampers will be utilised compared to the regular GT.

While there’s been no official word on whether the Mach 1 will arrive in Australia, Wheels understands the new model will head our way to appease our ravenous Mustang-hungry market.

If the rumoured outputs are accurate, the new Mach 1 will be an absolute riot.





Skeptical about those power figures. But other US motoring mags are saying it will have 1hp less than the GT350. Not sure how they will do that with 0.2 litres and 1000 less rpm to play with.

If this thing gets to Australia and if its like a GT350R then my Fairlane just became a deposit...

Or ill do my usual cheap **** thing and wait 12-24 months and get one then...or see what engine upgrades become available through Ford Racing.

Either way its good news all round.

This engine started at 307kw almost 10 years ago, so they will have come a long way if they can get 390kw. Hitting 610nm IMO will be a much harder target. The torque will hurt from the lost capacity over GT350 more than the power.

120nm/L is about the limit for NA engines, so they will be doing well to get 600+.

I don't think that torque figure is realistic. You see a lot of these higher winding engines pick up hp, but little in the way of torque.

Why are they testing the car with smaller wheels on back?

Why not all big or all smaller, not 2 big and 2 comparitively small?

Funny you say that as it was only the other week I saw a Maloo with mint massive wheels on front, and crap tiny things on back.

I questioned my mate assuming flat tyres and he said "for burnouts" and laughed like I was stupid for not knowing......probably fair enough

That's nice (although the wheels look like they're off a BMW M3 CS).

Shame they stuck with the single piston calliper in the rear rather than using the 4 pot fitted standard to the GT350.

Can't spot any difference interior-wise though.

The latest GEN3 Coyote runs the same compression ratio as the Voodoo 5.2 and with a few mods, can easily make 390kW

The differences between the Voodoo 5.2 and the GEN3 Coyote have narrowed to a point where there is practically no advantage to the flat-plane V8 anymore, apart from that unique sound

The 5.0 peaks at 7000rpm and the 5.2 at 7500rpm so it's 8250rpm redline is a bit overkill in my opinion. A tuned Coyote will happily spin to 7800rpm but still peaks around the same rpm as the GT350 due to the cam profile.

Also, the Coyote feels stronger at low revs thanks to it's port and direct injection where the Voodoo only has port injection.
