"Collectable" doesn't neccisarily mean "rare". It more accurately means "Uncommon". That doesn't really mean low production numbers...although, like the yellow BA GT you mention, it helps a lot...it can mean something that an awful lot of which were made, but not a lot of which survive today. For an example, look at 2 liter Ford Escorts...old VW Kombis...XD-XE S-Pack Falcons...the list goes on. None of these cars could be called in any way "rare" at the time of production, but when was the last time you saw a really nice original one on the road, or even for sale?

It's a black art choosing what will be "the next collectible" of anything. With Falcons, I'd look for something with unusual options...again like that yellow GT you mention...but even specced-up lower end models or special editions, not neccisarily the top-end expensive models.

Many bag the EA, but they were a great design for their time. I remember driving a bottom of the ladder GLi (?) and boy did it feel good. It is all relative, and they weren't that bad in 1988! Time told with them, but doesn't it for everyone? No V8, sure, however they were a step forward from the XF. Little steps, and all.

Certainly a better car than the alternative, a VN Commodore with those ridiculous rear wheel arches.

PS - not saying you are bagging them, btw.

I'd agree with that, the FG XR8 is almost certainly going to be the last FALCON with a V8.

I agree here. I had the only BA GT built (build number 351) in Mercury Silver with orange stripes and seat stitching. A one off, nicely optioned car with sunroof, leather seats and premium stereo. I had it 5 years and it only had done 40,000+ kms when I sold it. It was even written up in the Herald Sun as a one off and "highly collectable".

It may have been "collectable", but that made absolutely no difference in dollar terms at sale time.

The last of the 5.8 XD/E's were it for me and I'm still hunting for one of those.

Yes exactly ........ something collectible doesn't necessarily mean rare or expensive.

A GTHO111 is rare, collectible & expensive ...... in comparison a P5 is collectible but not rare nor expensive. It is really hard to think of anything that would have the 3 in their favor. An XA GT Coupe is worth similar $$$ today as it was new. A good Landau (I regard as collectible) would cost around $35-$45,000 mint today. New they were worth near $100,000 in today's terms. Chuck that $100,000 in the stock market or property back in 1973 and wonder what it would be worth.

Thats because you were selling it before it became collectible though. you could pick up old GT's for peanuts in the 70's for instance but look at them now,
The last of the 5.8 XD/E's were it for me and I'm still hunting for one of those.
In the mid 80 to late 80's you could pick em up cheap as chips, hard to find nowadays so it's likely you will pay a premium for one, nice choice too mate

G6E Turbo ?

I reckon the NEXT collectible is the XD/E 5.8 stuff. AU XR's starting to get rare vs want, especially limited variants such as Pursuit, Rebel, T-series

Reading this with a bit of retrospect, the thread did start 7 years ago, heres my take on it...
The ESP's have definitely sought after as too the ED sprints.
Everyone pointed towards the T series cars, T3 is still the pick, don't think you'll loose out on one of those but the T1-T2 market has bottomed out, they seem to be on par with a good XR8 and don't get snapped up as quick as the T3's.
I think the BA GT may have performed the worst though, I'm seeing them everywhere for next to nothing.

B Series have just about bottomed out IMO. There are some roughies out there but it wouldnt cost to much to get them right.

$10-15k gets you a FPV that would need some TLC but definitely drivable in the process.

From there up it depends on what colour/combo you want.

Yep, it seems the ED Sprint has begun its run, given what people are asking for the things now...
Has handily outperformed the local equities index in % terms since my purchase late 2009, been a lot more fun as well! Housing has doubled in inner city areas since 2010 or so, if so the ED Sprint has outperformed that (off a lower entry price!) too. Not bitcoin tho. Collectable & appreciating. Keep yours original, folks.

What would be really nice would be any original EBII S-XR6s left, these are still pennies as of seeing original ones in the 2K range last year... they are really significant cars, probably best handling/power offering since XT GTs and until the AU XRs... no one realises this it seems...

And that will be the beginning of the cycle. Cars like these get cheap because they're plentiful and not the latest fad, and are treated as their current dollar worth. Suddenly they are all gone - and the prices spiral.
I remember when driving around in my freshly restored XB Fairmont coupe in the early 90's. They were labelled 'bogan cars' and on a few occasions we were judged by the car we arrived in - and all but refused service... Anyhow after the P-platers destroyed most of them, even rusty ones are worth a fortune,a nd they are now seen as a 'classic' collectible. Buy up now and store...

It's not always the fastest or the most highly regarded, it's usually the obscure and hard to get.....
Who knows what that will be in the next 5-10 years ?
My money is on GT-F / BFGT40th.

The rest will be mediocre fodder for bogans at best.....

Also dont want to throw a spanner in the works, but................

What happens when the baby boomers start to sell up, these are the people that have driven the prices because they were part of their era.

Look at kids born in the 90's and 00's...do they have the same attachment? I think there is a period now and perhaps the next 10-20 years where it may keep on bubbling along.

Then you will hit the Playstation/Gran Turismo era, my money is on quality Japanese cars if you are looking at making coin. Not your Skyline GTS-T, GTR's are obviously already gone up but the EVO's, STi's, last gen RX7's etc.

IMO you cant compare Aussie classics to global classics, the awareness and demand is just not the same.

Basically, drive and enjoy now!

A mate has just come back from Europe and was having the same discussion with a collector from the UK.

He's already looking for the later cars.

There will always be a market for the classics, less for trends.

Last classic car show I went to every second car was a GT copy....

The two very good drive trains the f6 310 and supercharged v8s especially with ZF should do ok at least hold their value for a while. I own one and have driven the other. Had I known how good they were, would have had one years ago they are that good.
Especially for the price.
I've said it before lining up 5 or 6 cars and overtaking them in a few seconds is something to behold and gets the hair to stand up every time, incredible.
They may yet become collectable as they become rarer.

I know quite a few Gen Z teenagers that would froth at the chance of an XA or XB coupe on the cheap if their owners' generation died out... so generally the prices should hold, as the icon has inter-generational appeal.

Yep to the Japanese cars, the STi, then the WRX, then even the humble insurance-dodging RS... Liberty GT wagons, 3.0R... etc

Agree with you. The factory forced induction Falcons will be sought after. The Barra turbo is legendary, only matched by its sibling the supercharged Miami V8
