Now sales will plummet further (happened with the Magna too) as owners will think that warranties won't be honoured & parts will be unavailable the day after Ford closes. Joe Average won't see that all the dealers will still be operating as normal.

You can't blame the public for not buying "big local cars"...the Commodore and Falcon are the "flagship" models, but in this economic climate people want cheaper to run cars. I just got the rego for our four cylinder Triton...just over $700 here in Queensland...but that's a huge saving over our previous car, the six cylinder G6E. People do think about this sort of thing when making a purchase.

This sucks big time, and will be the start of a bit of an avalanche I think.
My thoughts go out to all the Ford employees affected.
Our cement plant is skating on super thin ice, too, so I feel some of their pain.

Everyone article I have read, the same phrase pops up "Ford has not officially confirmed any closures"

Everyone wait until the press conference before you get your shovels out to bury yourselves.

With a new model coming out in 2014 why on earth would they announce a closure of doors in 2016. I can see it two ways, to make people buy it cos it's the last one OR people won't buy it cos it's the last one so when the doors close parts will be few and far between.

Yes. As I said a little while ago, closure would be the end of 2012. I said this back in 2011 I believe. Ford's failure to stay current with a changing market and demographic and their inability to deliver a product that the consumer wanted, has ultimately caused this.

I feel genuinely sorry for the people who will lose their jobs. Selling 700 Falcons a month is not sustainable.

All is not lost, sure the Oz Ford will no longer be an option but Ford cars will still be made available. Maybe the Austrailian made ones will become collectable, that would be some consolation? We should all feel sorry for those people who will lose employment though that is not good in this economy!

My work isnt directly involved with the auto industry, but alot of our customers are, and especially being so close to broady the flow on effects will be big.

Just disastrous for all involved. Sign of times I guess. I know so many Ford lovers with a Mazda and Great Wall sitting in their driveway. Tough times forcing families to choose affordability over absolute quality. R.I.P the best and most beautifully constructed car in the world.

Yeah, but those of us like to drive large RWD sedans with grunt will be left with no offering from Ford. I'm not going to buy a Taurus, no matter what they call it, even in AWD form.

Well with mineral and energy prices going soft the Australian economy will be under pressure!

I guess in 2017 we should start driving commodores.

This happened under Labor's watch. I vaguely recall that govt leases used to be required to be Australian-made. They relaxed that several years ago.

Hope we dont become like Greece!

I'll buy a VF when I'm in the position to purchase a new car, which will be soon enough. Screw Ford turn and run with their tails between their legs when the going gets tough. Screw them I'm really angry about this more than anything.

I'd love to take the mayor at his word, but the regional towns were built around manufacturing or primary industry. Geelong is screwed, he just isn't saying it.

A very sad day for this nation of ours, the domino effect this decision will have will be disastrous.

RIP Falcon.
