Didnt think you could wind back the speedo on modern cars, maybe asking for and looking at the service books or records, would help to see if the k's on the car are true, never buy are car without a paper trail, not worth it

I saw it on tele tonight. Cheating robbing mongrels.
Looks good for business at Pennant Hills Ford. The dealer principal is up to his neck in it. I thought the reporter did a good job covertly filming a lot of it.
Hope they get their dealers license busted. And the guy winding back the speedo's needs to do time.

The bloke doing the winding back is only in breach of tax laws if he doesn't declare the income. Altering an odometer by itself isn't against the law, misrepresenting kms travelled is. As the bloke isn't selling the cars, as bad as it sounds, he will walk.

The RTA obviously doesn't cross - match data on their system when it comes to how many kms a car has on the clock when rego renewal time comes around either. What's the bloody point of filling out the kms on speedometer section each time a car is reregistered when some thieving scumbags can come along and wind the speedo back by 10's of thousands of kms and nobody at the RTA spots it

The RTA does cross reference, they just don't care, if it is current NSW then you can get a history check anyway on the rta web site.

I kinda figured that would be the case but didn't want to say it, pretty typical of any government dept, all they're interested in is taking your money and causing you inconvenience. It's still not right though if someone at the RTA actually knew this was going on and turned a blind eye to it they are just as bad as the criminals I wonder if it was a politician who wrote the quotation " It's only illegal if you get caught "

I have seen a few cars from QLD with no yearly rego checks = no kms logged, These cars were in NSW car yards and no way they had traveled the km indicated I am a mobile auto electrician so have a far idea, this is one to watch out for.

I wouldn't be surprised at small used car yards doing this, its been done for years but I wouldn't think a bigger franchised dealership would risk everything doing it! I'm glad they've exposed him before he did any more damage but at the same time I'm angry as hes giving us other genuine and honest dealerships a very bad rap. People won't remember his name, people will however recognise the brand though unfortunately, not the dodgy person.
This will directly affect me/us at BGF even though we've got nothing whatsoever to do with them and that sucks. The link is doing the rounds at work and no ones happy.

You mean the same type of encryption used to prevent after market "flash tunes"?

i just a thought, i`m wondering if the ecu logs engine hours?, i`m thinking you could at least get an idea if the k`s and engine hours are roughly within striking distance , er possibly/maybe?? i understand the car travels at different speeds/gears and what not,
but i`m thinking there would be a within percentage you could say now that is just way to much of a difference, thoughts?

A laptop and a program is all it takes. In Vic where you do not get RWC every year, it is easy to change the ks and never be caught.

The R.T.A wouldn't know what the km are on a new car that's less than 5 years old as a pink slip isn't needed.

Go and look at imported Jap cars you see cheap at importers, especially 90s models like 300ZX, Skyline, etc.

You really think that all these cars from the 90s only have a genuine 40,000km on them?

You can tell from the wear on the drivers seat bolster, steering wheel, inconsistant panel gaps, sagging bumpers, all these little things create a bigger picture.

From the RTA webside

"Odometer readings

The RTA is presently experiencing some technical difficulties with odometer records information. The RTA recommends that you independently verify the accuracy of odometer readings and apologises for any inconvenience."

more likely that the dont want any legal responsiblity...

Yup, agree. It's almost par for the coarse. When I started looking for my Delica the first thing You are told by other owners and forums was to ignore the odometer reading as it was almost guaranteed to have been wound back, probably more than once in it's lifetime in Japan before it even hits aussie shores then there's every likelyhood it gets done again here. all you can do is go over the vehicle and take it as you find it and look for the tell tales of use and abuse to determine the condition. The Delica I bought is a 12/94 build and yet it only now shows 123k on it. The guy I bought it from was the first aussie owner back in 06 and he said it was showing 60k when he bought it. I believe him when he said he'd only used it as a weekender and once a year holiday vehicle but I'm not silly enough to believe it only did 5k a year for the first 10 years of it's life.
