Advanced Stability and Braking Features Bring Added Reassurance to Ford Transit Custo

State-of-the-art Dynamic Stability Control and braking technology provides Ford Transit Custom drivers with extra reassurance in a variety of road and load conditions

New or updated Dynamic Stability Control features – such as Trailer Sway Control and Load Adaptive Control – significantly improve handling, stability and traction

More powerful braking system with larger diameter discs front and rear delivers superior performance when fully laden and a more car-like pedal feel

MELBOURNE, 20 Feb, 2014 – The all-new Ford Transit Custom features the latest stability and braking technology, providing the driver with added reassurance in a challenging range of conditions, as well as improved vehicle control in emergency situations.
The new model offers a state-of-the-art Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system as standard, which includes a range of new or enhanced features such as Trailer Sway Control and Load Adaptive Control. These technologies significantly improve the vehicle’s handling, stability and traction.
At the same time, the Ford Transit Custom also features a more powerful new braking system with larger diameter discs front and rear, which is designed to offer superior performance when fully laden and a more car-like pedal feel.
Ford engineers took the latest stability and braking systems and tuned them to suit the unique requirements of one-tonne commercial vehicles. The capabilities of these systems will give drivers greater confidence and control, whatever the road conditions and whether their van is empty or fully laden.

Latest DSC Features Enhance Stability and Traction
At the heart of the Transit Custom’s stability and traction systems is a state-of-the-art DSC module that uses advanced sensors to constantly monitor the vehicle’s behaviour, and helps the driver maintain control by applying effective – and often imperceptible – intervention when required.
The DSC unit includes a number of new or improved features designed to further enhance handling, stability and traction, and the systems have been specially tuned by Ford’s vehicle dynamics experts to suit the typical usage and variation of load conditions experienced by 1-tonne vehicles.

The key new or enhanced features introduced on the Ford Transit Custom include:

Torque Vectoring Control – similar to the system introduced on the new Ford Focus, Torque Vectoring Control is a standard feature on the Transit Custom. It improves behaviour in corners by braking selected wheels to transfers torque to the driving wheel with most traction, which improves handling and creates a more stable and agile feel when cornering

Trailer Sway Control
– new for the Transit Custom. When “snaking”, or trailer sway, occurs while towing a trailer, the system reduces the engine torque and gradually increases the brake pressure on all wheels to reduce the train speed in a stable fashion until the trailer sway stops. To be activated, the system requires a Ford factory fit or Ford accessory tow-bar to be fitted.

Load Adaptive Control
– helps to deliver optimal stability under a wide range of vehicle loads. Significantly updated for the Transit Custom to deliver more effective performance, this feature monitors the total mass of the vehicle, and adjusts the operation of the DSC stability systems to take account of variations in vehicle load, so the systems remain fully effective whether the vehicle is partially or fully laden

Traction Control System
– updated for the Transit Custom to deliver significantly improved traction and grip when travelling at low speeds. The system acts by reducing engine torque, then brakes any spinning wheels to divert the engine torque to the wheel with the most grip. By precisely controlling the way engine torque is delivered to the wheels, the system delivers better traction, acceleration and stability on loose and slippery surfaces
Additional driver assistance features also included as part of the DSC system are:

Hill Start Assist – to help drivers pull away safely on steep inclines

Roll-Over Mitigation
– to help prevent the vehicle getting into a roll-over situation

Advanced braking systems

In combination with the stability systems, the DSC module also provides a number of advanced braking features which complement the standard anti-lock braking system:

Emergency Brake Assist – helps provide and maintain additional brake pressure in emergency stopping manoeuvres to help reduce the stopping distance

Hydraulic Rear Boost
– a new feature on the Transit Custom, designed to further reduce stopping distance by providing additional brake pressure to the rear brakes during an emergency stop when the ABS system is activated

Electronic Brake Distribution
– ensures the optimum split of braking effort between the front and rear brakes according to the vehicle load condition

Emergency Brake Light
– a new feature which signals to other drivers by flashing the indicators when the vehicle decelerates quickly

Larger, more powerful brakes with car-like feel
The Ford Transit Custom features a new, more powerful braking system which is designed to improve laden performance and feel, as well as providing increased durability.
The front brake discs are increased in diameter by 8mm to improve responsiveness. They are also substantially thicker which, combined with larger brake pads, delivers better fade resistance and longer disc and pad lining life. The rear brake discs are also increased in diameter by 8mm, with larger brake pads.
A larger master cylinder and a high output power booster, combined with careful tuning, ensures that the system delivers a more powerful, car-like brake pedal feel, especially in laden conditions.
