Ford Transit Range Expands With Bigger Heavy Hauler

Arrival of larger all-new Transit range represents an important challenger in Australia’s competitive commercial vehicle landscape

Proven 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engine mated to six-speed manual transmission with Euro 5 emissions and fuel saving stop / start technology

High levels of safety with Emergency Assistance standard across range

MELBOURNE, 12 Sept., 2014 – Ford Australia is expanding its Transit range with the arrival of the all-new Transit, which will be available in six new variants.
The Transit joins the Transit Custom in offering significant increases in safety, reliability, cargo capacity and standard features.

Transit models will be powered by Ford’s proven 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engine, mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed manual transmission and stop / start technology. Powered by a Euro 5 2.2-litre TDCi engine, the Transit develops 114kW at 3,500 rpm and 385 Nm of torque at 1,600-2,300 rpm.
The new Transit is based on a state-of-the-art global platform and replaces the heavier Transit derivatives in Ford’s commercial vehicle line-up.

With the arrival of the larger all-new Transit, the updated range now presents an important challenger in Australia’s competitive commercial vehicle landscape, delivering key features and load-capability Ford customers expect and desire. The range is engineered and designed to be comfortable, spacious, innovative and dependable.
“Transit lines up in a very competitive segment against the key brands in the market, with prices starting at $47,6801, rising to $52,6801,” according to David Katic, Ford General Marketing Manager.
Katic said the ultra-competitive commercial vehicle market in Australia was segmented into two categories – 1-tonne and 2-tonne. “We’re seeing the commercial vehicle segment develop into two clearly defined groups of operators; those people who want a 1-tonne van like the Transit Custom and those who require a 2-tonne van like the Transit,” he said.
“Ford now has both bases covered for those commercial customers who have distinct needs for a vehicle that not only delivers maximum load efficiencies but is comfortable, has a car-like driving environment inside but can handle the heavy duty expectations of our customers.
Katic said the 1-tonne commercial vehicle customer was typically a self-employed professional tradesman who needed a 1-tonne van that was urban, smart, professional, versatile and above all, functional, like the Transit Custom.
The Transit Custom has proved popular since its launch earlier this year, with styling and size suited to the urban jungle, high levels of safety and smart connectivity technology.
For a fleet or small business owner, the larger Transit provides the perfect entry into the 2-tonne commercial vehicle arena, where the priority is running a highly functional and reliable fleet of vehicles to carry both people and materials.
Katic said this customer needed a vehicle that was fuel efficient, comfortable and like all Fords, had strong after-sales support and high levels of safety. “For this customer a vehicle must not only be a functional, capable and dependable workmate, it must also deliver total ownership confidence,” he said.

Superior driver comfort, advanced technologies
The Transit cabin is spacious, with increased shoulder room, head clearance and visibility, and a more comfortable driving position with a steering column fully-adjustable for rake and reach.
An all-new interior, with a stylish new instrument panel, incorporates a range of smart stowage solutions including a full-width overhead shelf and a large hidden compartment under the dual passenger seat. Two 12 volt power sockets can be used to charge tools or laptops without the need for special adaptors.
Among the standard features are a Digital radio, air-conditioning, power front windows, cruise control (with adjustable speed limiter), trip computer, front overhead lighting and tachometer.
Importantly too, the Transit comes with a full suite of safety features, including:

• Driver and front passenger air-bags
• Seat side airbags and side curtain air-bags
• Emergency Assistance
• Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
• Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
• Traction Control System (TCS)
• Roll Over Mitigation
• Load Adaptive Control
• Torque Vectoring Control
• Trailer Sway Control
• 3-point seat belts (all positions)

Like all Fords, the Transit has been tuned by engineers to provide benchmark driving dynamics, with more confident, car-like handling in both city and highway driving. The cab is significantly more refined, with reduced noise levels and improved ride comfort.

Emergency Assistance
Like the Transit Custom, the Transit cabin comes standard with Ford’s Emergency Assistance system.
Emergency Assistance is a vehicle-based, no-cost, non-subscription call-for-help system that is already available in more than 5 million Ford vehicles globally, providing owners peace of mind when travelling.
The system delivers a critical voice message directly to 000 operators, indicating that a vehicle has been involved in an accident in which the vehicle’s air-bags have been deployed and opens the line for hands-free communication.
The Ford SYNC Emergency Assistance system uses the driver’s own mobile phone via Bluetooth®2 and runs in the background once the phone is properly paired with SYNC and is within mobile phone range.

After the one-time set-up, the phone connects with SYNC every time the driver enters the vehicle with his or her phone and the phone is turned on and Bluetooth®1 is activated.
Should an accident occur in which an air-bag deploys or the emergency fuel pump shut-off is activated, the feature uses SYNC hands-free phone capabilities to connect the driver directly with a 000 operator through the paired phone.
Before initiating the 000 emergency call, the vehicle’s SYNC system will provide a 10- second window to allow the driver or passenger to decide whether to cancel the call. If not manually cancelled within the 10-second window, SYNC will place the 000 emergency call.
If an accident occurs while a connected phone is being used for a normal call, the Emergency Assistance system can end that call and dial the emergency services. Also, incoming phone calls will not interrupt communication between vehicle occupants and the 000 operator.
