OK hopefully the end of the saga; got the car back today, after having it towed to the dealer first thing Monday. 3 control units (over $1000 each, all faulty), software upgrade & a key fob ($300+) later, it appears to be sorted.
Apparently the techies assigned from Melbourne are recommending the keyless system be dropped from the next facelift.
