A Big thankyou to all replies. Yes nut/thread is LH, 3/4". 10 TPI. In the end I chose to drill a series of small holes on one flat and open the nut up. Nut was quite soft, likely mild steel. (Not savvy enough to include photographs) The quote above and some research confirms the possible issue with belt flipping off etc. However immediately unable to source a replacement LHT nut so plan to make a new shaft with a RH thread. Could turn the motor around (putting belt slack side on top !) to run blades clockwise (looking from above). Lower shaft bearing needs replacement anyway. Next job is to remove flange from shaft, may be shrunk on or just more rust. Incidentally the machine sat idle in a shed for 20 plus years, don't actually know how much work it ever did.
