Default 2008 Focus - Heater Core

Hi all,

2 weeks ago I noticed the radiator fan staying on for longer than it normally does after shutting the engine off.

Checked the coolant level, and needed to top up with 2L of water.

Just got it checked out by Park Ford in Bentley, and they say the heater core has a leak.

This would explain the smell inside the car, and the fluid loss.

They've quoted me nearly $1800 to fix, $400ish is parts, the rest is 10 hours of labour.

Now the car is just out of New Car Warranty (October I think), why would the heater core fail at this point in time?

Is there anything I can do to work in my favour when dealing with Ford on this? Getting the carpets cleaned free of charge, or replaced or reducing the bill?

I really can't afford such a huge bill after only owning the car for 18 months. (Bought in May 2010)
