I remember at the time being wowed at how smooth the engine was, accompanied by that sweet rasp coming back through the firewall and subtle exhaust burble out back.

However, I also remember how seemingly gutless that little 2.2 inline 6 felt. There were a few things happening here...................

- While it only made 125 kW at 6100 rpm and 210 Nm at 3500 rpm, the E46 was reasonably light, so performance was adequate. However, because of how bloody smooth and refined that engine was, it sort of gave the impression that it underpowered. Compared to a Barra for instance, it didn't sound strained up top.

- Also consider I had been driving large capacity SOHC and DOHC 4.0 inline 6's for quite some time at the point. The low revving and high torque a complete contrast to the 2.2 which needed revs to perform.

Not a complaint, but rather a compliment in regard to how refined the engine was, it remainined composed from idle to red line.
Mate of mine hired a Z3 back in the day with that setup ... although manual.
Was tripping around Vic as we were with a group .... he couldn't drive manual though ... and I could.

Did bulk kays on that thing.

I was younger and it was better than anything that I had ever owned or driven. Was a great cruiser for what it was though ... and thoroughly enjoyed that drive.

Was thankful it was the 6 and not the 4 as well .... was so smooth and effortless in my memory and that manual was a perfect in it.

I have driven one in the 2 door variety. Auto unfortunately.. BUT, have a close look at the 2 min 20 seconds vid. There was 2 things that amazed me about that test drive. Numero Uno had to be how it handled. Number 2 had to be how quiet it was at speed. Now I'm talking about Quiet here...
Like doing 170 and not having to raise your voice to ask the other half to pass you the water bottle kinda quiet.

$220k... when I drove one... It's not expensive, cause it does everything it should. BUT, servicing costs are a bit out there... unless your a Dentist...
