Top 10 brands in February 2019 (rounded, preliminary data)

1 Toyota 16,350 (down 10 per cent)
2 Mazda 9230 (down 7 per cent)
3 Mitsubishi 8500 (up 20 per cent)
4 Hyundai 6430 (down 19 per cent)
5 Ford 5680 (down 6 per cent)
6 Kia 4850 (up 4 per cent)
7 Volkswagen 4050 (down 13 per cent)
8 Nissan 3900 (down 19 per cent)
9 Honda 3850 (down 18 per cent)
10 Holden 3800 (down 18 per cent)

Quote:
Our love affair with utes continued, with the Toyota HiLux (4400) comfortably outselling the Ford Ranger (3350) for the top spot ahead of the Mitsubishi Triton (3150), landing pick-ups in the top three places outright.

Indeed, Mitsubishi Triton 4x4 variants came within a whisker of overtaking Ford Ranger 4x4 in February, according to the preliminary data.
Quote:
Demand for the Ford Mustang remains relatively strong, with about 500 delivered in February compared to about 570 sales for the Holden Commodore.

“It was a bloodbath,” said a leading multi-franchise dealer in one of Australia’s biggest capital cities, who asked to remain anonymous. “Enquiry was down across all our brands and our forward order write is also extremely weak.”

The dealer said much of the buyer uncertainty was driven by the upcoming Federal election and tighter credit requirements.

“Plus we’ve had record sales for most of the past five years and I think people are just catching their breath,” the veteran dealer said. “A lot of people have already switched to lower interest rates and are waiting for their current leases to expire.”

I was told that Mazda in Townsville sold 75 cars in the week. Insurance money started to come through after the floods!!

I think Ford have really found the ceiling for what people are willing to pay for a dual cab. $64000 driveaway RRP for a 2.0 XLT is starting to get up there. It wouldn't surprise me if actual sale prices are $5-10k less than that.

Maybe but even then, that discount still makes it dearer than the lot of Utes besides Hilux
and some that are now a lot newer too. So maybe that's why Triton had a great month while
Hilux just dominated way out in front.

I can imagine Ford trying to hold fast on Ranger pricing even if that cost a few sales,
it's balancing act of course and no doubt some discounting happened otherwise sales
would be much lower. The longer this quiet period goes on the more Ford will be forced
to sharpen its pencil unless they want to join Holden with 2,000 sales less, poor guys.

Toyota only down 10%?
They have been "shutdown" since mid feb due to a cyber attack.

Triton is coming, $6000 cheaper at the top level than a Ranger.

It’ll definitely make inroads from how on. ( price and a brand new model).

And triton wants to compete in the 4x2 market too,
https://www.mitsubishi-motors.com.au...etail/721/7194
with petrol 4x2 with tempting offers, the MY18's are a bargain at the moment too (search carsales), but Hilux still has the petrol auto 4x2, not that every one wants one, but Toyota has that extra "variety" to choose from in this class.

What other Mitsubishis are selling outside the Triton and ASX? Our dealer had a shocker this month. That overall result is surprising.

Is interesting to see Mitsubishi do so well from regularly developing old platforms, as opposed to more substantial updates that others do. Nissan were amazed to see that Triton was much more profitable per unit than Navara, will be interesting to see where future development goes within Nissan/Renault/Mitsubishi. Secondly if Hyundai/Kia were considered together as they truly are, then they are a solid second place already.... WITHOUT A UTE!

Worrying thing is Ford are still down.

More work needed on the non "manger" models, SUV's should be doing better...Endura should be a cracker.

How Mitsubishi have turned the Triton into a desirable car is a thing of wonder.

It's cheap... quite reasonable in price ( I went and looked at one a couple of years ago) but decided I didn't want to drive a boat.

At the end of the day there isn't that much that's special about these things.

I think Ford Australia should do the GT500, hybrid and EcoBoost Ranger and an EcoBoost V6 Ranger Raptor, 2020 Explorer with hybrid, EcoBoost and diesel options, Expedition with hybrid and 3.0 diesel option, upcoming Bronco, F150 and F250.
I think Ford Global should build the next Edge/Endura on a shortened version of the new RWD Exporer platform. Perhaps it's time for Lincoln to go beyond North America and China.

If Ford EU is dropping Edge once a 5+2 Escape (like Tiguan Allspace) is released then doing anything with Edge in RHD is going to become noticeably a more difficult scenario with respect of ROI....

It's interesting what you raise, right now if I had to replace my diesel Territory I would want a petrol SUV as the extra purchase price and higher diesel cost in Oz doesn't add up for my usage and I'd rather get back some performance instead...I've even been looking at 1 year old X5's in my spare time...and for the sake of being called a broken record...my love of the Lincoln Aviator if it were anything else but a motor vehicle would have my wife thinking I'm having an affair.

See, the interesting thing is that RHD Edge already exists, so even if FoE cancels it,
there is a possibility that Ford will continue to supply it to RHD countries to help
recover development costs...

it depends how well or not is sells here, I am concerned at the price being a touch
too high due to mandatory diesel, a 2.0 EB base engine could help but then, it adds
to recovery costs..

It sure looks like Edge started strong on Europe a year and a half ago but then it
turned into sales we'd be glad to claim, about 9,000 last year

I wonder how much of an effect people getting knocked back on loans is really having. Can all these declines be attributed to this or are their other factors at play? The whole election is coming thing is utter garbage imo.

Ford need to sharpen their pencil on Ranger now.

I guess the question is how many are actually getting knocked back?

Federal elections always seem to tie up with a general economic slumber and then it's all back to normal afterwards. As I mentioned elsewhere in my case clients are definitely looking at their costs and querying a lot more now then 6 months ago.

Ford can sharpen their pencil by taking items off the options list and making them standard. I also wonder if list pricing was lowered so that it was closer to real world sale prices and the discounting was reduced would it improve things long term for all sales. Some don't even bother to consider based on being scared off when they see the rrp.

Don't think I could ever bring myself to buy a Mitsubishi, but the new Triton does look the goods.
Cheapest of the Hilux-Ranger-Triton trio and with a 7 year warranty and 3 year capped servicing, from a business/ commercial point of view looks like good buying. And pretty full of features too by the looks.

My days of blue eyed brand loyalty ended with local manufacturing, even when ford's announcement came I still felt that moving to holden or Toyota was still going to support local jobs but with them gone now it's all based n best value,
I guess most now can still respect the brands products to a point but if the value of money or support is not there, other brands can fill that void,

That new triton is def gonna eat into sales, I know a few tradies who only stayed away from the old model as they rated the looks as slightly better than the bt50, a couple of them are already ordering the new ones as their current triton and rangers are due for replacement.

That new triton is def gonna eat into sales, I know a few tradies who only stayed away from the old model as they rated the looks as slightly better than the bt50, a couple of them are already ordering the new ones as their current triton and rangers are due for replacement.
Buying a Ranger or Everest still supports local jobs considering they are designed and engineered here.
