Default Statutory Write-Offs (NSW)

I'm beginning to feel this scheme has become as corrupt as the one it was supposed to stamp out (dodgy repairs and rebirthing).

The number of cars with stat stickers on them, sporting increasingly trivial, genuinely repairable damage is making me suspect the public is getting shafted. Less cars fixed, means more new cars sold, more income from premiums, and higher priced S/H parts for the few repairs that are done.

One of my dailies is a twice-over write-off, it has also been re-hit in three repaired areas, and the only real "overdamage" was in an area poorly repaired by an authorised marque repairer when it was new-ish.

I'm totally sold on the safety of a repair that follows manufacturer-prescribed methods, and would like to see the repair industry push back a bit. Maybe they could fund ANCAP crash tests on some current models with major repairs?

Of course it,s corrupt.The whole stat writeoff was instigated by the motor manufacturers who collectively got into the ear of some high ranked public servant,pointing out how dangerous repaired damaged cars could be if repaired incorrectly.As we know public servants are generally as dumb as dog****.so the deal got pushed through parliament without any evidence at all.Insurance companies weren,t in favour because they got so much less for their damaged cars,but the damage was done so they were forced to wear it.

No, it was about crime gangs rebirthing stolen cars with a written off car's identity.

If you ever saw the Sydney auctions 10-15 years ago you would understand.
Good luck if you were a legitimate buyer back in those days, plenty of people getting threatened and bashed if they bidded on the wrong car.

Don't think manufacturers mind their cars being fixed, they make heaps of money on spare parts.

Agreed...

It's almost as Dodgy as the Tow Truck Industry..

If I do an Oversize Load somewhere. It's illegal for me to put My Own Escort/Pilot Vehicle on the Trailer to come Home. as my Truck/Trailer doesn't have TT plates, Nor do I have "Tow Authority"

A mate of mine has similar issues with a truck.

He can move cars if the truck or trailer doesn’t have a winch though, and it needs to be able to drive onto the tray or trailer under its own power.

Apparently, if ever inspected they can ask you to remove and put back the car, showing it can be done under own power.

He was also moving camper trailers and one stage, and a loophole he had was to use a motorised jockey wheel to get the trailers on and off. A huge hassle, but only necessary if and when inspected.

The insurance companies pushed for the stat write offs and the automotive industry backed them for very good reasons.
It suppose to stop the dodgy repairs and criminals rebirthing.
I've seen a lot of death traps on the roads over the years because of this.

Insurance companies did not push for vehicles to be Stat Write-offs.

The sole reasons was to prevent rebirthing and prevent unsafe cars going back on the road.

Mate brings in stat write-offs into NZ to repair, one was a 2016 SS wagon 4k on the clock. Only damage was a bent exhaust pipe on one side plus minor rear bumper damage nothing structural (looked like it had backed into a bollard) that was classed a stat write-off, now his knew cheap daily. He has come across many cars with minimal damage that have been write-offfs.

I've even seen Vehicles that were "Recovered Stolen" listed as Stat Writeoffs.....
