Yes I still buy plenty of other cr#p made in China, but that's because EVERYTHING is.
Honestly, if I went to Bunnings to buy a drill and there was an Australian made one for $150 and a made in China one for $100, I'd buy the Australian made one.
What if the Australian one had a 12V Nicad and the chinese one was 18V lithium.

That said its not necessarily a bad thing for modern days buyers i reckon considering there buying them for everyday transport, dont get me wrong i like the old stuff myself, fwiw a mate a couple of years back managed to secure a new Norton, fabulous looking thing and looks wise retained a bit of the old Commandos presence etc sadly on its maiden voyage it ended up on the back of a truck with a lecky problem which was somewhat ironic. Off topic sorry but your post reminded me of it.

Apparently Australia buys more Chinese cars than American and German cars lately. Pretty sad.

I’ve test driven 2, the MG3 and ZS. Both were just ok, but presented well and were priced razor sharp. That end of the market has been handed to them by the mainstream brands.
Who says they are a bad car? All these buyers obviously don’t care, same as some who buy an oppo/Huawei phone, it does what it says on the box, why spend more?

Isn't that what they have been doing for ages anyway - to build up capital to be in a power position?

I don't know. I don't get it. I'm not happy about it. I think I'll support my local industry if I can so I don't feel bad. So I may spend more, just to avoid my own misunderstandings.

Also I wont touch any food made in NZ as it is also all Chinese. They just rebag it and say its from NZ. NZ dont have strict rules for export. Watch out for that.

I’ve never moaned about American or German cars. I’ve never moaned about cars from any country but China. I’d buy a car from most countries.

China starts a trade war with Australia and we thank them by buying their cars at record numbers. Weird.

How many buyers of new MG's even know they're made in China?
If Ford decided to import factory RHD built F-150's made in China would we buy them, or Explorers or Lincoln Aviators and it was of equal or better quality than USA assembled...and price was equivalent to US?

My aunty and uncle bang on about "Australian this" and "Australian that" constantly on Facebook (like a lot of people) yet they go buy a new LDV and Kia (Korean I know) Hypercritical yep, but its what they can afford and what features the car comes with in the end. Anything goes wrong they have 7 years. These are people who want an A to B, they don't care about dynamics like a lot of us car folk.

The warranty is a huge drawcard to many many people.

If the government would encourage refits of cars as done with military equipment, it could support a lot of local industry.
What if I bought an LDV to cart around Australian fruit? Is this ok..

What Australian option do they have for a new car?

One that doesn't come from a country that is bullying us?

Ranger and Everest are probably two of the few vehicles that has significant australianness, being designed and developed here. Just a shame it isn't built here too.

Would not touch one even if it was free. China is playing political games with our trade - barley, wine, coal, etc. Appalling conduct in South China sea, bullying Taiwan, debt poverty in Pacific and Africa, etc. Friend has a regional car dealership and he would not touch one as a trade in after bad experiences.

People - have ethics when buying. Buy this crap and it will come back at us as military force.

Their people movers look like a good buy, it looks alright.

Then I've also been looking at Kia Carnivals, they look gangsta as for a people mover.

I don't even have kids, why the hell am I looking at people movers

Hi Guys,
In 2017-2018 I was a Valet Driver for a Toyota Dealer in Sydney { sorry cant mention the Dealers name) and i was working in the Service Department.

They were also a MG Dealer and i remember talking to one of the technicians about the MGs.
He said there "garbage and not worth the trouble". The fact that they have the MG badge and some people think they are built in the UK like the original MG which we know that isnt the case.

It's clear the average person doesn't care about where their car comes from or who makes it. As long as it's cheap, has the features they want or has the right badge. Everything else is lower priority.

Look at VAG cars. People are buying those cars like hotcakes even though they still have the moral compass of their founder. It's estimated that diesel-gate VAG cars kill 5000 people a year in Europe alone.

Mercedes are the recall kings in Australia with 53 recalls in 2020. No one cares about that. Mercedes are still seen as a premium product.

I don't think many Australians mind having a car made by a company that's owned by a authoritarian dictatorship.

These "China" threads are funny. Every one of them ends up the same way. China bad, china evil, you buy china you are a traitor who sold your soul to the CCP.

I think the average aussie is well educated and experienced enough to ignore the politics and know what they are buying. MG is just one brand. There are many other brands that are obviously owned by China yet the public still buy them. People don't care for the politics. You buy from a dealer, they employ locals, everyone pays tax, the economy churns. As long as the supply chain doesn't involve human rights issues, then I don't see the problem.

They p!ss me off, they look like vehicles armed with those special speed traps that look backwards, across 6 lanes, and can hit you from miles away.

Here are the stats on China car sales in Australia.

Who remembers what the 1st thing the Government in Thailand did after signing a free trade agreement with us, shutting out any chance of us exporting Territory's ect, to them.
We are really showing them also.

I remember the same attitudes being held towards Hyundai in the early 90s to early 2000s when they came to Australia. I remember If you said "Ive got a Hyundai Excel/Kia Rio", your friends/family/colleagues would turn their noses up and reply with an ignorant "urrggh why did you buy ones of those for?" response because you bought a Korean car, while pointing at their 'straya' built falcodores with the other hand.

Fast forward to today, Hyundai and Kia are leading the market in with their warranty period and I think only today did I hear the new Tuscons have a recall that was made public so far. The quality looks pretty good too apart from that. My mum has the Kia Sportage GT Line and loves the thing. My 92yo grandma bought the 2018 Kia Picanto new and she was a die hard Jap fan for decades.

Im not a fan of the current Chinese cars in terms of looks. I still think they need to stand the test of time for me to provide an honest review. But hey, I have no issue with people if they want to buy a LDV or Great Wall if they think it will be good enough for them.

I reckon the amount of brand patriotism shown 20yrs ago is no where near as strong as it once was.

Here's a MG I'd consider (the Rover moreso)

https://www.classicandsportscar.com/...tzt-t-rover-75

There's nothing of the former scale really to defend any more in terms of Australian industry in the auto sector, so all importers on an equal footing. Have at it. Maybe question if the country the importer is from is blocking trade with Australia for any items/disregarding signed FTAs - breaking rules etc etc.

I've noticed Aussies will go the cheapest option, almost every time. You know that smirk when you get that dead-set rippa bargain? Political stances evaporate compared to the savings that you just made on that deal where you practically stole it from the other bloke. Low ball the offer and it's so sweet. Look at that goose who just paid full price. Brother in law got a cabin cruiser for an absolute steal, yeah, it foundered at its mooring, but it was the deal of a lifetime... etc etc

Japan attacked Australia back in the 40's. Time has moved on since then and Japan is no longer a threat.

If you have info about Thailand being a threat to Australia these days fair point. I'm not aware of anything going on right now.

Fairfax owns Drive. They have been printing Chinese propaganda in their paper up until recently.
Plus most people don't like controversial comments these days. Discussions that could make people a little uncomfortable are not wanted.

I would, because it's a Ford. The badge is more important than where it's made.

But if it wears the badge of a Chinese brand, forget it. It's Chinese brands that I'll avoid, not necessarily Chinese made.

Agree there is lots of propaganda going on, both sides. But the link was actually sourced from The Age, owned by Nine Ent Co....definitely not a propaganda arm of China haha. Actually didn't fairfax merge with Nine Ent Co a while ago? Not sure how it works now.

Anyhow its just numbers, I didn't really see any controversial pro or against comments from the author.

BTW, did people realise the chinese also own Volva and Saab? I didn't, until today!

Spot on. Was just thinking that. We were also mocking anything "made in Taiwan" a decade ago.
