6 x 9's

Hey there.
I was wanting to fit some 6x9's in the parcel shelf of my ED.
But there is going to be a problem with the middle seat belt.
It is right next to the 6 inch speaker and there won't be enough room.
Has anyone else fitted a pair of 6x9's with the middle seatbelt in the same spot?

I'd just stick with a good quality 6" speaker on the parcel shelf, and even better ones up front.

Buy a half decent amp and sub, and it will sound really good.

6 x 9's aren't really worth the hassle, if your going to get a sub down teh track.

Ive seen ppl have there speakers around the other way so that they do fit. So insted of the speaker runing left to right accross the rear shelf it runs in the direction of front to rear.

Ive got 6" pioneers which need amping and a sub which is amped and the sound is good.

Wanted the 6x9's as i am not too keen on a sub. Was going to run a 4ch amp to 6x9's and better front speakers.
If anyone has done this could you please post a photo?
Also, any photos of upgraded front speakers?

Get a sub and sit it behind the back seat, you wont compromise on boot space, and you'll get a better sound.

I was going to do the same as you, but ended up with a 15" in the boot and 6" alpines in the back

Glad I did, because no matter how hard you wish, 6x9s just can't compare to the real bass of a sub

All my speakers are running form the headunit though :( But I'm getting a response 4x100RMS amp soon

And my 15" is powered by the response 2x150RMS bridged into 500RMS at 4 ohm

The sub can't handle it, but thats the way it should be!

I love the sub so much I'm going to put two 15"s in

Yeah ive got a 15" pioneer sub too, and the fact of the matter is nothing beats subs lol

What have you put in the front?
Did you change the speaker grill in the front door?
Should i run them from the amp as well?
Can you post a pic of your 6 inch in the back?

i got pioneer components in the front- u cant beat components so much clearer sounding with the seperate tweeters, in the back i got pioneer 3 ways the do the job, in boot i got 2x12 clarion subs and its all running off 2 cheap boss amps which will be getting changed soon to respone amps.

but yeah u wont get the real bass that u get from a sub in 6x9's and in my last eb i went down the 6x9's path and hacked my parcel shelf up real good, and to be honest i think that my 6" sound better that the 6x9's

Keep in mind it's illegal to cut any steel from the parcel shelf, so you'll have to use spacers if you want 6x9's.

Say's who? We've fitted litterally hundreds of pairs of 6x9's and just about everyone needed the parcel shelf cut up a bit, in most cars the size of the spacer required for the magnet to clear the parcel self is that high that the speaker impeeds on your vision out the rear.

It's written in the ADR's, parcel shelves are classed as structual. Just because you've done it hundreds of times, doesn't mean it's legal.

Autobahn will cut the parcel shelves to fit 6x9's, surely a company that big would not break the law on a daily basis.

Would they??

Anyway I'd go for a good set of component 6"s, I heard some focal one's the other day and they were perfect.

^^thats where I work, Autobarn... I've never heard of any cars being un-fit for a road worthy due to 6x9's in the parcel shelf, so if it is the law, it mustn't be very heavily enforced in vic.

It is most definatly illegal to cut the parcel shelf... it is a major part of the cars structure..

Although it's not heavily enforced, it IS ILLEGAL to cut a parcel shelf. I used to work at Strathfield back in the day and we cut that many parcel shelves it wasn't funny. Nowdays I'll generally recommend to people that they DONT cut the parcel shelf and fully explain the consequences. But no matter what you say, some people have their heart set on bloody 6x9's and won't listen.

If I was you I'd get a subwoofer if you want bass. Don't think it won't happen to you as I got done for a cut parcel shelf by a motorbike cop in Bayswater and it almost cost me $1500 in engineer's work and certificates to pass the RWC. I only got out of it because I was lucky enough to get a letter from Strathfield stating that the work done wasn't structual.

its fine to cut the shelf, just not the structual beams. and 6 x 9's really need to be run from an amp to sound the best they possibly can as HU's generally dont produce enough power. and if u cover the cut shelf well enough u shouldnt get done as the officer conducting the inspection is not allowed to remove any fixed parts (screwed or bolted in) and only one should conduct the inspection, if two or more go at ur car report it, especially if there is 2 vehicles pull u up.

i made some custom spacers out of wood and painted them black, and cut around the seat belt in my EL, looks good, 6x9's do the job for sum people who just want that little more than 6"

Yeah i wouldnt bother, its not worth it for 6x9's. IT IS illegal to cut anywhere into the parcel shelf, even widening the original speaker holes. If you do get a tightarse cop he will make you get a certificate from a Vicroads approved engineer.

I was browsing the Vicroads mod guide and also noticed that you must have an engineers certificate or acceptable evidence from the extractor manafacturer (as to how it is to be fitted, evidence it complies with ADR's etc) if you fit extractors to a car made after July 1976
