Default 99 Laser model ID??????

Daughter has a 99 Laser LX 1.6L
every time she goes to get parts she has trouble as the FORD ID plate under the bonnet(next to the rhs bonnet hinge) has the model ID as "BJ"(which was a Mazda designation for the 1997-2000 323 and Astina
I think it should be a "KN" model, this plate has not been tampered with and all the stamping is machine precision aligned(everything perfectly square and spaced)

Anyone shed any light on this?

I'm sure you'll find they are much the same car, I know they share the same engines and have for some time as far back as the 80's and I think you'll find that Ford and Mazda still share engines today as well. I don't know where your daughter is sourcing her parts from but any decent parts place should know this, it shouldn't be an issue to find good quality aftermarket parts to suit either, it's not necessary to go genuine for everything. There are quite a few sellers on eBay who have a good selection of parts to suit as well, I have bought a few different parts to suit Lasers over the years from a KH to KQ. I even sourced parts from a wreckers when necessary

They are much the same car but I think "KN" would be correct. I have a 1993 Ford Telstar called GE but I know it is AX and the model after it is also GE but Ford has it as AY. When you are chasing parts for your car, take the Vin/Chassis number, the year and month of manufacture which is on the plates and your rego papers. Both Mazda and Ford make changes month by month and you need all of your cars identifier numbers to get the correct parts. Good hunting
